View Full Version : P284 - BSOD when watching an OTA for a bit
I don't know if the developers are still looking for input on what causes BSOD episodes on P284, but I just had a new one.
In the past, I have only seen the black screen of death when using the guide to change channels.
Just a couple minutes ago, my 811 had a BSOD and reset itself when I had just left the TV on the local OTA radar channel for an hour or two. In Northern Virginia, the local CBS station (channel 9) has the local weather radar on one of the subchannels. I had the 811 tuned to that channel. After the storms I was watching had passed the 811 did a BSOD and reset.
I didn't have any power glitch due to the weather (my TV and the 811 are on a battery backup)
No one was doing anything to the 811. It just decided it was time to reset apparently.
Has anyone else seen the 811 reset while just watching an OTA channel like this?

Well since they have had 285 and 287 out in limited quantities with their own BSOD flavor on 288, I would try to reproduce this one on 288 when released. Thanks for the report.. Might want to try the same thing when 288 goes out and report back.
Speaking of P288, any idea or inside scoop when it might be coming out? :D

Yes, I get it on mine and I have P287. The station makes a PSIP change and my 811 gets FUBR.

I don't know just how accurate this is, but from a lot of what I read right here on this board and the other SAT forum, all these types of problems (BSOD, audio/video freezes, EPG/"No Info" lock-ups, etc.) seem to be non-existent with the 942. Is there any basis to that statement? I've had my 811 for just a little over a year and never had any issues with it (when viewing SAT) until I had installed an OTA antenna and started using the 811's OTA tuner for local HD broadcasts. I hate to give up on my 811, but if it's going to be continually plagued with OTA problems, I'll retire it!! I want a receiver I can depend upon for both SAT and OTA programming..

I do not have a 942 to compare against, but I do have a Samsung SIR-T165 OTA STB on mothballs. The 811's OTA works fine in my application and I am happy with it's performance.

I have both my 811 and my 921 hooked up to the same antenna. Both give similar performance. When I have issues with the 811, I see the same thing on my 921. Based on what I have read and my personal experiences, the 811 is more picky in terms of quality of OTA signal coming into the box. I have found over time that my 811 in my installation as been more solid than the 6000 installed prior.
If you are having a lot of problems with OTA and the 811, the first spot I would like to try and solidify a good experience on the 811 is make you have a good quality external source. I know this is more an art than a science, but I do know that there are people using the 811 with both OTA and Dish and have positive experiences. And no.. it is not just Jason and Me. ;)
