Does the 942 have (or planned to have) show based recording? Is there anything the 921 can do the 942 can not (except maybe work right)? Also what is the story with the EPG, same as the 921, no locals in the guide unless you subscribe to the locals via Dish?

Thanks

The 921 does not have Name Based Recording nor are they any plans in the forseeable future to add it said Charlie Ergen CEO of Dishnetwork.

No EPG for digital locals for either 921 or 942. Subscribing will only get analog data re-mapped to the digital channel slots therefore substations will contain repeat data as the main. Also no word that anything is even being attempted to address this concern.

Substations do not contain any guide data (from dish).

And to answer the original question, the 942 DOES have NBR. It will record (or Not) record a show based on if it is on rather than a specific time slot.

The 921 has a 2 hour pause buffer where the 942 only has 1 hour (even in single user mode). The 921 also has s-video output for SD where the 942 doesn't (just composite out for SD). The s-video connector can be useful if you want to transfer video to a Super VHS or DVD recorder (although some DVD recorders have component input cabability which may be a another option).
