View Full Version : Rave is a great HD Channel
After 3 weeks of Voom, I have to say that Rave is a really good channel. Rave runs a large number of concerts in HD. Last night they had a soundstage program that was Burt Bacharach and Ron Isley. It was really excellent in HD. This channel alone has been worth the extra $5/month. We have watched several of the concerts and they are really well done. The HD makes it seem like you are in the front row of the concert. The other great deal is there are no pledge breaks like there are on the PBS channels.

...waiting for him to realize that they don't have the large number of concerts he thinks, but rather just keeps showing the same ones ;)

It is my favorite for music. I'm hoping that they will add some new content.
That's always a possibility. I think I have watched the DVD "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" at least 12-15 times just because I like the music and the added dimension of seeing the performers is well worth it. So, in some cases I will be seeking out the repeats. The going price for most any live concert these days is typically $75/seat and up unless you are in the nosebleed section so i still see Rave as a bargain. I found Sirius to be a big add for Dish also.
Boylehome- nice pic of Shasta Dam. I hear the lake is pretty close to full pool right now. Some of the houseboats we rented there had Dish on them.

DoyleS the lake is full and looking good! It is now hot and the lake makes for a very nice experience. The only dish that I saw on a house boat was owned by Merle Haggard and that was quite some time ago. Do they put them on some kind of gyro? with the constant movement, I don't see how they could keep a stable signal.
A number of the boats at Jones Valley have Satellite Dishes on them. Typically it is the Dish 50 setup with no locals although that may have changed now. The higher end boats have tracking dishes so that they can follow the sat while underway. The ones we have rented have a fixed Elevation and the Azimuth is on a lazy susan affair that we would set when we moored each night. They give you a compass and the first time it may take you a 5 minutes but by the 2nd day you can tune it in within just a minute. As far as stability, it was fine unless someone went by and hit you with a big wake, then you might get some breakup on the signal. The big boats have full A/C, refrig, freezer, BBQ and even hot tubs. In August when the lake is up in the 80s and the air temp is 105, a hot tub is not what you really want but it does keep the kids occupied.

I have to agree with you Doyle. The whole production is fantastic. They did at first, have some problems with audio drop outs which have now been fixed. The 5.1 is first rate too. The whole Voom package is well worth the $5.00. If anybody out there is thinking about getting the Voom package and have not, I highly Recommend it :)

I could watch (and listen to) it over and over again. You have good taste, well, in music anyway. :D If it were possibe to wear a hole in a DVD I would have done it with that one.

I really like the Rave channel, I will be glad when some new concerts appear but I have watched some really good shows. That Burt Bacharach and Ron Isley concert was really interesting!! Something different.

Yes! While some new content is in order, RAVE is a favorite of mine!

Voom's best kept secret (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=43043). Shhh! Don't tell. ;)

When the hell is Soundstage Season 3 going to get going on PBS! Rave needs some new content for sure!
Still one of my favorite VoOm channels for sure.

I am also very happy with RaveHD. When I here a song that I really like I just back it up and record it, then I can see it when I feel like it.

I really enjoyed the Marianne Faithfull club performance. It was great to hear the old broad belt 'em out. I was a little disappointed she didn't sing "Why'd Ya Do It?" which makes "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette sound like a Carpenters love song.

I wonder how many subs voom has now. Perhaps the extra income will help with the acquisition of new content.
Voom, per se, has zero subs. DishNetwork has x subs who have subscribed to the "Voom" HD channels. Dish pays Voom a portion of the $5 per sub fee. Previously (prior to April 30, 2005), VOOM collected 100% of the $40-$90 subscription fees that were then being paid by less than 50k VOOM subs.
I seriously doubt that the per-subscriber fees currently being paid by Dish to Voom even covers Voom's operating expenses. If/when the Voom channels propogate to other MCVPs (D*, cablecos), Voom's revenues will grow accordingly.

Rave is amazing. I'm currently watching Dream Theater: Live at Budokan, which I recorded the other night on my 942. Fabulous show from one of my favorite bands. I've also seen Tori Amos, Fleetwood Mac, and others. Easily my favorite Voom station (although I've also been enjoying Monsters and, interestingly, the News station...)

If you subscribe to HBO, aren't you an HBO sub? I'm sure HBO counts how many people subscribe the channel. That's $$$. Why would Voom be any different?
Voom would never have been getting 100% of the fees. I bet a large chuck was going to the premium channels (HBO, Showtime, etc). Also, there's a huge cost associated with keeping the satellite in the air. Assuming the transfer is approved voom will not have that either.
The movies they carry are very old. Most have already aired on broadcast TV. Their expenses are going to be a small % of what they were before. They barely even need customer service now.

I subscribed to the Voom channels about a month ago and I agree with you that Rave is one of the best HD channels. I also like Equator better than discovery, the rest of the channels are just OK

Agree, Rave really makes the Voom Pak for me. Of course I will be much happier when and if they bring on StarzHD.

Rave is very one side with the style of music/artist they show. There lack of diversity is alarming...but the channel is very well done though.
Many of the productions they show i've seen on my local PBS but the DD 5.1 that you get from Raves really makes the difference.

I do not think they are that one-sided. I have seen Country, Jazz, Alternative, Rock, Classic Rock, Acoustical, Punk, and Rap... As far as I am concerned that is a decent variety of music. I would rather not see them turn into a no music music video station.
My bandwidth isn't all that wide so there are concerts on Rave that I don't stick around for but I really enjoy a lot of them. The lighting and Videography are really very well done. Close up shots in HD are excellent, the definition on the hair and skin makes it really great to watch. It is like sitting at the concert without all of those people sitting around you or in front of you. You always have the best seat in the house.

Voom knows how many people have subscriptions to the DishNetwork Voom HD channels, but the subscriptions are with DishNetwork, not Voom.
Voom would never have been getting 100% of the fees. I bet a large chuck was going to the premium channels (HBO, Showtime, etc)...Perhaps you mean that VOOM never would have retained 100% of the fees they collected. First, you account for 100% of the fees you take in, then you pay your expenses from revenues, and, if necessary, draw from operating capital. At least that's generally accepted accounting procedure - first, you account for all your revenues, then you account for your expenses. If your expenses exceed your revenues, then you must draw from another source, usually operatng capital.
The movies they carry are very old. Most have already aired on broadcast TV. Their expenses are going to be a small % of what they were before. They barely even need customer service now.I'm not sure what the point of your post is. Are you complaining that some of the Voom movies are "old", as you say? Have you looked at the release dates of some on the HD movies on HDNetMovies, HBO and Showtime? As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing wrong with "old" movies - in fact, many of them are much better than what's coming out lately.
Again, I'm not sure what your point is. Have I addressed your issues?

I'm saying that thier expenses are MUCH less then they used to be (partially because of the older programming they carry - not that there's anything wrong with that). And, because they are not paying HBO, Shotime, ESPN, Starz, etc.
I don't know what kind of financial shape Voom is currently in. That's why I was curious as to how many E* people have subscribed to Voom. Voom had 50,000. E* has 10,000,000. It seems plausable Voom could have many times more eyeballs now then they had before.
The old VOOM was more than HD. They also carried over 100 SD channels that they also had to compensate which they don't have to do now. While their portion of the $5 per month may not be huge, with DISH numbers of subs and growing, I think they will do well in the long run. I am also hoping for some new content to to introduced. I understand that they have not changed a lot of content because DISH only subs are just discovering them and for them it is new. Not only RAVE but I like Equator and RUSH. For me, I would have picked a few other VOOM movie channles instead of some of those they carried over in the first launch.
