Well, since no one else over here has posted it, Scott over at Satguys has posted a fax that states that the new DVR options may be available along with a free dvr with a 2 year agreement to D*. There is also much discussion on AVS and DBS about this, with several other individuals saying they have the "know." Not to steal any thunder from Scott and his great site, but what do you guys think??? I would be all for a 2 year agreement in order to get an HD DVR for free.

An upgrade path for equipment for existing subs with low or no out of pocket costs will keep me a happy camper!

Still rumor for now. If you read the memo, it mentions nothing specifically about a 'free' upgrade. I think aggressive promotion was the term used. Could very well be free, but for the time being, it's all conjecture.

I look for some good upgrade options to come, but Free may be stretching it. But I don't think D* will be asking us to shell out $650 at least. :eek2:

Then come the price increases for HD with everyone locked in to a 2 years contract. Good work D*!

Yeah, if they didn't get everybody on a 2 year contract, I bet there won't be any price increases.

Yearly programming increases are a fact of life, face it.

Also note the future changes to the early cancellation policy.

yep, they sure are.....are they doing this for all receivers or just the HD ones, though? Is this a move to get more people to use D* for HD? Then, how much will the price of the HD package go up once they get..say, a 25% increase in subscribers (HD)? They aren't giving anything away, you can count on that. I will take it and run though. I'm enough of a sucker to fall for it.

I'm still bitter about the ST-HD price increase, anyway. I did cancel but it still has left a bitter taste in my mouth.

lazuruspup....can you post the link to that other thread or PM it to me. Thanks!

Nate,

The memo stated that only high end receivers(IE HD) would require the 2 year commitment. Standard equipment would still only be a 1 year. Maybe we are reading too far into it all though. It says the new promotions will be available starting August 1. The link to the memo is on the front page at http://www.satelliteguys.us

What happens if after they you are committed for 2 years,D* adds all the Hd channels promised.

Then they charge extra for Hd locals, then charge $40 extra for the Hd package to cover all the Hd channels they will add. Then $30 Hd surcharge for each sport sub(MLBEI,NHLCI,NBA,and college football etc.)

You have 2-$1000 HDPVR what do think the cost will be to get out of the commitment?

I really hope I'm wrong about this, but I would not rush into a 2 year commitment.

I have been a subscriber for 6 years. Why should I be required to make a commitment?
If they want to keep me, they had better be nice. :D

If only new car dealers had a new-model upgrade path for a two-year commitment.

Kind of like the Ford Red Carpet Lease? It's a 2 year lease as opposed to Chevy's 3 and Honda & Toyota's 4 year.

It's called preservation of revenue.

It's called preservation of revenue.

In my case, it would be no additional revenue. probably wait until receiver shows up at a Flea Market, if they do this commitment thingy. :)

This sounds like a cell phone contract.

I said preservation of (existing)revenue, not additional revenue. :)

If they had any confidence in their service offering, they would not do this. I certainly will not commit to a required subscription which has no requirement for them to deliver the service. Where is the warranty for the service? :)

I'd sign a two year contract if I got to keep the hardware myself and if there was a compelling enough reason to get the higher end hardware. If everyone else was going to offer the same thing as well and perhaps without a contract such as cable then I think many would think again about signing any contract whatsoever. I would think that DirecTv would want everyone to get an HD DVR during the swapout to prevent from having to swapout once again once HD becomes mainstream.
