Should I leave DirecTV for cable? Going over the channel line-up the only channel I would be missing is NWI. With cable I could bundle it with broadband Internet. Then I could replace local and metered long distance telephone service using VIOP for $25.00 per month flat. Plus free local network HD service. These days cable pricing has come down on top of savings in Internet service and Vonage.

With satellite I hoped to one day have access to distant market local TV stations but if looks like I'll have quicker success there by setting up my own Internet protocal TV system. I like that snazzy grey dish but I can always keep it on the roof just for the appearance. Am I missing something? Anybody want to give me a reason to stay with D*?

Cable pricing in my area certainly doesn't compare to satellite. The Comcast DVR service costs an extra $9.95 per month for one receiver and another $4.95 per month for the second DVR receiver. I don't pay anything for my two DirecTV DVR receivers (the cost would be just $4.99 per month if I had a basic programming package). And the cheapest digital package of programming they offer starts at $55 per month, which is substantially higher than DirecTV's cheapest package ($42.95 per month plus $4.99 for a second receiver).

Comcast also charges $42.95 per month for cable modem service, which is only slightly cheaper than the $45 charged by BellSouth for DSL. And the Comcast price is only good for subscribers to their cable TV service - they charge $57 for anyone who doesn't subscribe to their TV service.

Most important of all, only DirecTV has my favorite programming - the NFL Sunday Ticket.

That is the best thing in sports. Now if only the NFL would waive backout rules!!! Even if they charged an extra PPV fee if the game isn't sold out. I had the Sunday ticket before I had TIVO and it was really distracting trying to really follow more than one game at a time. If I had a favorite team in another city I would get it again for sure. Many people move from one city to another and Sunday Ticket is an excellent way to bring your team with you. I hope and pray one day someone will see the wisdom and profit making potential in offering something similar for local newscasts from other cities.

I need to compare prices but a home theater guy I met today said local cable beats DirecTV right now in terms of price especially with HD. With Cable local HD signals are free. With Satellite HD is extra and even regular local is extra.

We all have different circumstances, yours is pertinent to you and you alone. :)

NewsJunky, if you called in and told me you had that possibility for programming, I would tell you to take it. Of course Directv would like to keep getting your money, but it's up to you in the end.

All local HD signals are "free"! All you need is an HDTV, a receiver and an antenna (and a signal). All HD D* receivers can receive OTA HD signals, which are free. With cable you have to pay for their HD same as with D*. Some cable companies offer the locals in HD but I get those OTA for free. I don't need cable or sat. to get them, though.

News Junky, If you can get a better deal with cable, I say go for it.

Just make sure it's not a special offer that will expire in 3-6 months and later you end up paying more than you do now.
