Do you have a backup device? CD Rom, DVD Rom, tape, external HD? Are you looking to use what comes with Windows or are you looking for a third party solution?
Windows Backup has ASR (Automated System Recovery) built into the backup utility. This writes information to a floppy disk that is used in conjuction with the windows install CD and your backup media to restore the system to the state at the time of the backup.
Retrospect is a good backup utility for Windows that has the ability to create a rescue CD that can be used restore the system. http://www.dantz.com/en/products/win_personal/index.dtml
These are just two items that I am familar with, so don't think they are the only options out there. I've heard good things about Norton Ghost.

Only XP Pro has ASR and NTBackp by default. It is not normally included by the major PC manufacturers... if you have the CD, look in the ValueAdd folder to see if NTBackup is included on your version.

ASR needs a second partition or second hard drive. You don't need a floppy for ASR, but it helps.

System Restore is all ready part of Win XP's setup installation. So you do not need to use the Win XP CD !
For Windows XP Pro. Here is how to find S/R and how to do the procedure:
Click Start
All Programs
Accessories
System Tools
System Restore
Once there [System Restore]
Click System Restore and choose a date earlier than the day you had your problem, but that you know your computer and Windows was functioning properly.
You will see highlighted dates [1 of 5 if I remember correctly] that you can choose from. After that is done your computer will operate as if no problem ever existed ! You can even go back to restore and choose another date if you choose to do so!
A great feature in Windows XP. :)
