Why does Directv blackout the Yankeeography show for? I use to be able to watch it a couple of months ago, because I remember watching the Yankeeography on Thurman Munson. It seems like they black out alot of stuff on that channel except for the New Jersey Nets stuff which I have no concern for whatsoever. Mike and the Mad Dog and Centerstage are good shows, but if these shows are the only thing that they show why even have that channel for people outside of NY? Thanks for your responses.

What channel are you watching this on? If YES, then that is a Yankee market only channel. Your lucky to get what you do. :)

Are they blacking out Yankeeography now?? I just watched one a few days ago and it was in the clear. I believe it was the Greg Nettles one.

Yep, because there was a Yankeeography on today for Catfish Hunter and I turned it there and tried to watch and it was blacked out.

Yeah, but they shouldn't black out shows about the Yankees it's not like it's a game or something. The sports pack already costs enough, they shouldn't black out shows about Baseball players when it's not even a live event.

I thought they decided to show all of the programming on YES except the games and replays of games......

I watch that channel all the time and they blackout the Yankees Magazine, Yankeeography, basically everything associated with the Yankees except the pre and post game shows.

I'm in the Wash DC area and I have the RSNs and MLB Extra Innings. The only thing I ever see blacked out on YES is Yankeeography and game replays. Funny that the MLB package allows you to watch the games live but not the replays. As for Yankeeography - I have never been able to watch it, its seems its always blacked out. I asked DTV why a week ago and so far no reply from them.

It's a blackout dictated by Yes, not by DirecTV. Some of the RSNs black out not just games but some of the programs relating to the team.

I thought the blackout was dictated by MLB. I don't see why YES would have any reason to black out their own programming.

Correct, it's not D*. Sometimes league rules dictate the blackouts as well. I know that the NFL is a little finicky with their rules as the Steelers coaches show is always blacked out for me (not in Pittsburgh DMA.)

Another consideration is the material that is being aired, and who owns the rights to it. The legal rights to broadcast classic games or old footage may not be held to rebroadcast nationally.

Lastly - does D* make mistakes on blackouts? Yes. However, it has been my experience that is usually the exception rather than the norm.

The blackouts on Yankeeography are due to copyright restrictions on MLB highlight footage. MLB only allows so much of a program's content to be highlights as they, not the individual baseball teams, own the copyright on all game footage. Once the highlight quotient reaches a certain percentage, the RSN has two choices. Pay for a national license to show the footage or blackout the program outside of the area for which they already hold the license. In almost all cases, the RSNs choose the latter. Perhaps the Yankeeography episodes you have seen do not have enough highlight footage to trigger the blackout.

Oh, and before you ask, I do not know what the break point is. I just know why the RSNs have to black out certain programs even though they are not games.

Correct. (Although in my experience, different RSNs adhere to the MLB policy to differing degrees.)

As was pointed out in a later post, it's a license/money issue.

About the time Yankeeography is able to be seen by non-NYC DMA customers is when there is a rain delay and YES puts in filler programming to take up time.

A side point to this discussion relates to highlights on sports shows and local news programs. You'll notice that all your local news shows show highlights of all your sports teams. They are allowed to show short snippets. But they would not be able to show a replay of the entire game. Somewhere between those two extremes is the line they can't cross.

Something else I find interesting is when the local sports guy is showing a highlight of a game, say, the Orioles and Yankees, it is often the YES feed they are showing, yet it may say "Courtesy MASN". Obviously, MASN is the O's channel, yet you can easily tell its the YES feed by their scorebox and even hear Michael Kay's voice. I see this regularly with our local sports stuff.

maybe YES feeds MASN which then feeds the local sports guy
