ok i'm a little confused, i have a samsung hln567w 56" DLP (LOVE THIS TV!) i have an hd directv box using dvi, i got a samsung dvd-hd931 dvd player, it looks better using the dvi then the component, can i use a dvi splitter cable as long as i use 1 device at a time? why would i need a few hundred dollar switch?
Get the switch. You've quite an investment in your equipment. Why would you want to try using a splitter (in reverse)? In searching the web, I find that Ram Electronics has a solution for $249 -- http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/hd-DVI-2x1.htm
You might also check Lindy Computer Technology for a less elegant switch ($174.99): http://www.lindy.com/us/productfolder/09/97711/index.php
Granted, there are others, such as Geffen -- high quality stuff, but pricey. You'll need a switch that is HDCP compliant in all probability.
