I got a letter today stating that I could pay $45 (or close to it) to have my web page listed on 20 search engines for 1 yr. Is that really how they do it? (I didn't/ don't think so) Did the company who host my domain sell me out? The contact was from listingcorp.com. They only mentioned the domain name that links to my page , not the domain name that actually is my page(I found that very odd).
Most serch engines have a submission page where you can explicitly add a page on your site to their to-be-crawled list. Otherwise the page may or may not be discovered on their next crawl. It just depends on if other pages link to it.
It's also possible that for that $45, they try to help boost the rating of the page by using a network of interlink pages that all refer to each other. The idea at one time was that the more a page was linked to, the more useful it likely was. Anymore though and it might play as a factor, just not as much as it once was just because of companies like this.
Your hosting domain might have sold you out, but it's more likely that the company just did a whois and got your name/e-mail address from the contact information.

Yeah, I found the link on google to add my domain name to there "soon to be the most visited webpage on the face of the earth" list. :) Sounds like it takes about a month to get on the "list" and then you go from there. It said something about having your site linked from other pages would help. I'm not worried about it but I thought the $47.50 thing was interesting - almost looked like a scam. I'm obviously not going to do it because it isn't that important to me. I really don't care if people don't see my web page - it has personal contact info on it.
