Can You Really Get Web Hosting For Nothing?

The main thing wrong today with trying to find a webhost for most individuals and businesses is the shear number of them. Their prices range from free to hundreds of dollars per month. When you go out on the web today and do a search for hosting you will find page upon page of hosts. Some are well established companies with solid reputations and business plans that make sense. Yet some are beyond belief that anyone would host with a company that offers you a 100mb website for $.99. Yes I said that right $.99.

The other day I was purusing the search listings and came across a webhost that is providing just such a product. What I cannot figure out is why? The simple fact is to make any money on this plan with your expenses figured in it would take around 100 to 200 hundred such clients. That seems like an awful lot of work for any company for such a small profit margin. I thought to myself that the headaches alone would finish off any profit you might have made via hospital bills. These plans are numerous in varying denominations. And one has to think what in the world are they thinking.

Mark, are you serious? Can you say "advertising"?

That's what I thought, too, Bogy.

Seriously though, what is probably the best place to get hosting? I use godaddy right now because I didn't feel like "doing my research". I didn't think $48 a yr was bad either. I use about 10% of what I get so I'm pretty sure I have room to grow.

Read the article... the author had a less-than-stellar experience with a el-cheapo provider.

I'll have to admit I did not read the entire article previously. While many of the free webhosts do come complete with advertising supplied, there is another possibility. Can you say "scam." I'm sure there are some who just get overwhelmed, but also consider this possibility. You sign up 200 people for "unlimited" bandwidth, at a buck a month, paid in advance. That's $2400. After 2 weeks everything goes dark. If anyone is actually able to contact you, you explain that you are sorry, but you just didn't plan things out very well. Or perhaps you did. Because after all, like the article says, how many people are going to put that much effort into reclaiming their $12? Most will just write it off as one of those things that you can't do anything about. Not a bad take for a few weeks "work". Of course, OTOH, perhaps nobody on the internet does anything like this, because we all know that everyone there is honest and trustworthy.

your site (http://www.davidsonpcservices.com) is on doteasy.com ? U used their free page designer?

If yes, I like this. I used MS Publisher to create a site and it works except when viewed using PIE. So, I downloaded the dreamweaver trial and got it working but after 30 days it's like $300 to buy (yeah right).

edit: never mind, checked page info and got what I needed. $25 a year for a domain name and that's it? I'm might start another page.

also, I'm going to use you as a referral (hope you don't mind)

Enter a referrer domain (the Doteasy member that referred you to the service) here and receive an additional 100MB storage for yourself and for them - FREE!

Yes! :D We've been over this before. It worked and was very easy (think windows - user friendly but POS). You just can't view it using PIE becuase it puts everything where it wants, not where it is supposed to be. I did it over using dreamweaver (trial version) and it seems to be a little better but don't want to pay $300 (so I may just keep the PDA link).

EDIT: remember GUI? I am working with frontpage express, now, also.
