View Full Version : AskDBSTalk: SD and HD formats on 811
I have an 811 connected to Samsung HLR-6168W via DVI interface. I want to watch both SD and HD channels.
I found that SD channels (both OTA and via satellite) look best if I set the format to 420p (Menu 6-1-9, "TV type"). But when I switch to an HD channel, I want to watch it in 108i format. It appears that 811 is still using the 420p even for an HD channel.
Is there a way by which I can set 811 to send SD channels in 420p and HD channels in 1080i?
Thanks.
Vimal.

The short answer is unfortunately no. You have to do it manually every time, although I think it's on our short list of feature requests. ;)

It should shed a little light on that issue, if you can sift through it all. :)
HTH! :)
And welcome!!

Welcome VimAlp!! Hope you hang out for a bit.
To go a step further... There is an enhancement request for this feature. Also would include the ability for Native pass through. Based on that there is a transition to MPEG4, I doubt we will see this feature in the 811. But one can always hope.
By the way.. I assume you mean 480p?

Yes, I meant 480p.
This seems like a useful feature and if it is a matter of software update, then I hope Dish Network will consider putting this in. I plan to keep 811 for at-least another year or so.
Is there a way to program "a shortcut" in the remote control to access the 6-1-9 menu easily?

Not in the 811 Remote.. You would need a Universal remote to do it. There are some people have have done it and if you use the search you should be able to find some discussions on it.

I that setting your 811 to 480P makes SD look better, however, you might try to give yourself a chance to get used to SD displayed at 1080i, within a few days you won't really see a difference. At least I don't, now of course SD looks better when you switch it to 480P, it is just after a little bit of time you won't even pay attention to it. That way you don't have to worry about going in everytime you switch between HD and SD.
That said, I'd agree that the ability for the 811 to display 480P for SD and 1080i or 720P for HD channels would be nice. Though I'd also agree with Ron that we probably won't see it on the 811, but lets hope it will be available on future HD receivers at least.
