I caught a thread on alt.dbs.echostar that may pique some conversation. The poster pointed to this URL (http://www.macrovision.com/solutions/video/ppv.php3) that states:

The increased availability of digital-quality movies and
events on direct broadcast satellite and digital cable
systems raises an important challenge for the pay-per-view
(PPV) industry. Specifically, many consumers can now make
commercial-quality copies of PPV movies with the simple
press of their VCR record button. These copies, when passed
onto friends, neighbors, and co-workers, can displace both
video store rentals and initial and repeat PPV purchases.

Fortunately, there is a solution. Macrovision PPV copy
protection degrades unauthorized copies made on most VCRs,
without impacting the quality of the original picture.
Included in most digital set-top decoders distributed
throughout the world, the technology is poised to play
a key role in the growth of the PPV industry.

So -- if DTV or E* start using the Macrovision system, those of you who tape your PPV's (which I assume most people do) might have a bad experience.

Which leads me to a question - if you have a PVR, can you record the PPV and then dump ot to tape for archival purposes?

When you record a Macrovision encoded feature onto a PVR, you can still view the movie but the copy protection system goes along for the ride so as soon as you try to dump it to tape, it will get "scrambled".

I don't know why the studios insist on using Macrovision. It's very easily defeated by a simple box that's available at most electronic stores.

And as soon as they do enable Macrovision, just buy one of these (http://www.netbored.com/SCC.htm) and insert it between your PVR output and VCR input.
