I am interested in buying a Dish 510 DVR.

I would prefer the 522 but I am told that all 522s are leased and that they cannot be activated if purchased used (true or not true?).

There are quite a few new 522 on ebay. As I understand, 522s are not available for sale to the public. I have to assume that these are not stolen units but they are probably from a dealer who went out of business. I emailed the seller on ebay and he says he has sold several of them without problem. how ever, he does write that he is not responsible for activation issues.

Another way to buy a 522 is - if you don't return the leased unit - they charge probably about $300 but i guess the unit becomes yours.

has anyone purchased a 522 on ebay or elsewhere and activated it?

Thank you.

Has all the stuff you are looking for. No tax on anything bought if you live outside of the state of Florida. Mark will even allow trade ins with older dish receivers toward the price of new receivers.

The receivers can be used, it just cannot be a previously leased receiver and cannot have a balanced owed on it. It also must have been released by the previous owner. If it is a brand new receiver then you do not have all of this to worry about but may pay more than what a used one would cost.

With any sale, as for the Reciver ID# and the Smartcard ID number. The seller can get these from the System Info screen and are listed as an S00 and R00 number. With these numbers, you can verify with Dish that the recevier is not leased and has no balance.

If your just looking for a single unti DVR I would highly suggest a 508 for cost purposes, there seems to be VERY little difference other than hard drive size and cost (60 hours to 100 hours) Not sure the retail prices of both but I know there should be about a $100 difference.

Both have their advantages but the 522 had two tuners and 100 hours of recording time. You have not additional outlet fee with the 522 when it remains connected to a phone line although there is that $5 DVR fee. You get two rooms with DVR functionality vs. only one with the DVR functionality that the 508 has. Also 522 has Name Based Recordings although the 501/508/510 models are supposed to get them this year.
