View Full Version : Vertical Line Problem

Over the last 2 weeks, I've noticed 2 broken vertical lines coming from my 921. The two lines basically divide the picture into 3 equal parts. The lines are one-pixel wide and are either red or green depending on the background. The lines are there both from my S-VHS output for SD and composite ouput for HD. When a picture fades to black, they disappear. They're also not visible in an extremely white picture. Anyone else have this problem? I'm thinking it's a hardware defect.

Let's hope this is not an aperature mask CRT problem. You don't have a Sony or other Trinitron-like picture tube, do you? They have horizontal (whoops) stablizer wires at one or two locations, about thirds.

You should also tell up your resolution 480p or 720p or 1080i, of course the S-video is 480i. You could have an up/down conversion problem, so which resolutions are supported by your TV?

Are you using analog composite on a digital plasma/DLP/LCD/...? Can you use the DVI? You could be having a vertical conversion problem, maybe.

Are you sure of your convergence? HDNet early morning Tuesday, search for Test Pattern. It is only 10-15 minutes wide. If stepping through the guide work right to left. Record it. It was not listed last week?

It's a Toshiba rear-screen 57" projector. 480i and 1080i are the native resolutions. No DVI available. No problem with other video inputs (cable, DVD, camcorder).

It still could be the convergence. If you have a white grid or even lettering on a dark background, is it fringed green on one side and magenta on the other. This could be on as little as 1/50 of the screen area. Scroll the lettering and if it stays in the same place this is a good candidate.

I got my convergence info from
http://www.bus.ucf.edu/cwhite/theater/ToshibaTips.htm
Make the grid overlay (I used vinyl, cheap, clear, sticky, but stretchy), read the info, set 1080, use care, write settings down first, adjust the picture size to minimal overscan before starting convergence, use a tighter grid than they give, expect to spend 2 hours or more for a complete pass, take breaks for you and the TV, repeat after a week or more and then in 6 months. I could not get to "designer" mode so I could not record the 7 x 8 x 3 positions. I adjusted G (one gun) then R (two guns) and finally B, converging R to G and then B to Y=R+G.

You will know you did a good job when quickly scrolling HD credits do not wiggle side to side or change speed. You can get alignment to a small fraction of the displayed line width. You will not be able to go back to the "auto" grid nor the 3 x 3 adjustment because it will not be good enough and will undo all your work.

Toshiba 46H83 vintage 11/03 DVI, sale after Thanksgiving day, yours must be older. DVI or not does not change convergence.

Ken,
Thanks for your help. I've now discovered the problem with other inputs, which rules out the 921. I've done the convergence before. Your tips link is a big help.
