View Full Version : Is DirecTV doing something with their signal levels?

I have a conventional dual LNB, conventional 2 receiver DirecTV setup. This system has been in place for almost three years now. About once each week I check signal levels. My readings have always been in the low to medium 90's with an occasional reading in the 80's. Last week I was surprised to find that all of my readings on both receivers were ranging from the low 60's to the mid 70's. The weather was a bit overcast but in no way was it severe. I started checking every few hours and found that, at times, I was back in the 90's. But, later, I would get low readings again, even some in the low 50's. My dish is in a location that is very accessible so I made a physical inspection of the two cables. They were fine. When I started getting very low readings again I even exchanged the existing LNB for a brand new one that I bought to use as a spare. The new LNB made no difference. I also did a bit of "fine tuning" to the dish alignment but, basically, got the highest readings at the point of my original settings. This situation is continuing and, although my picture and sound quality are as good as ever, I am worried because it will not take much of a rain storm to lower these signal levels to the point where I will lose picture. Since my readings are so erratic I am wondering in DirecTV is doing some sort of "tweaking" to their signal levels as they continue to roll out new locals, etc. If any of you nice people have any info on this subject I would appreciate a reply. Thanks....

You got any trees which may be taller and have leaves, possibly obstructing the signal and blowing in the wind?

John, from me to you... A HUMUNGOUS THANKS!!!!!!
I live right on the edge of a forest which, naturally, is loaded with foilage. I love living here because of the hilly and wooded terrain. There are some small trees in front of my place. When I first installed my dish three years ago I made certain that I had plenty of room to "shoot" past the tree that was closest to blocking my path to the satellite. But, after reading your' reply, I went outside and took a look at this tree, which is located less than ten feet from my front door. Guess what? The tree has grown considerably in the past three years and was. indeed. blocking my signal path, especially when the wind would cause the branches to sway. I never noticed this growth before. Anyway, I did a considerable amount of pruning, which has left me with a nice, unobstructed signal path and my levels are all now reading in the mid to high 90's. Thanks again, I'm so glad that I became a member of this great forum.
