I am visiting my sister and she has AOL cable internet service from AOL. We are trying to hook a Linksys Wireless G router up so she can use her laptop downstairs with wireless but so far no luck in getting the settings right with the CD or manually.

Does anyone know what settings the router needs to be to use AOL? We tried entering a screenname and password but so far no luck at all.

Which Linksys roter? I understand that the WRT54GS is incompatible with AOL. AOl is problematic with routers.

Yeah we got fed up with messing with it so we called Time Warner Cable and switched to Road Runner for the same price $44.95 a month and just combined the AOL account with the Road Runner. It took about 15 minutes and they just did it over the phone. Now we have a constant internet connection and do not have to log into AOL and the router works with no problems!!!

Before she was paying AOL directly the $44.95 a month with the modem thru Time Warner Cable--frankly I don't understand why there are two different options or why you'd want AOL directly if they don't even support broadband networking.

I used to have AOL High Speed Cable Broadband through the local Time Warner franchise. My Linksys WRT54G wireless router and access point worked just fine with AOL.

This is the configuration setting on the Linksys gateway (router) that worked for me:

Internet Connection Type:

Automatic Configuration - DHCP
MTU: Auto
DHCP Server: Enable (allows router to manage your IP addresses)

The above settings are the primary settings that you'll need for the router to work with cable broadband, but there are others you may need to configure for the wireless connectivity to work, depending on what type of wireless access card your PC or network has, e.g., G, B, or a mixture of both. Also, don't forget about enabling security!

Note: Some ISPs may require you to have a static IP address. In which case, the Auto DHCP setting on the gateway will need to be changed to a static IP address, and then you enter in the IP address that the ISP gives you.

The 54g and 54GS are not the same router. Both AOL and Linksys identify the GS as being incompatible with AOL.

If you are installing a Linksys Router and it does not work "out of the box" the way it should, call Linksys. They have the settings for all the providers and can shorten your time of installation and frustration level immensely.
