I know there are a few folks from New Jersey on this board so here goes:

I'm moving from North Carolina to Glassboro, NJ this month (close on the 19th). I have Directv and Vonage, and plan on keeping both. Here in NC, Time Warner is nice and doesn't upcharge me for not buying TV from them. I notice that Comcast does, and even if I got basic cable from them, it's more expensive than Roadrunner. So, I'm seriously considering Verizon DSL as they also have a promo for first 3 months @ $20 then $30 regularly (and claim 3.0Mb down and ~700k upload speed). I won't be getting phone from them, just DSL.

Any opinions of Verizon DSL in south Jersey here?

Don't get it! It is terrable everywhere. They only have 15 min lease times, which created a big problem with being disconnected all the time. Also depending on how far you are from the CO your speeds won't be that good. I'm not that far from the CO and I'm only getting about 1.8Mb down and 555k up. So don't get stuck in a 1 year contract with them...Surprisingly their phone service it alright. Try it if you like!

Really looking for a South Jersey opinion, if there are any....

I just know that "regular" price Verizon DSL is $29.95 where Comcast will cost me about $60 per month.... I can put up with slower speeds for half the price. By the way, can anybody really tell the difference between 3 Mbps and 1 Mbps download on a normal basis??? In my mind 1Mbps is more than adequate for this price....

If you don't want my opinion, don't take it. You will be sorry later.

You claim you are getting disconnected using Verizon.
I sub to Verizon and I have never been disconnected. I get consistant download speeds of 2.7-2.8Mb p/s and uploading of 718 Mb p/s.
Relatives of mine live not far from the area that Bardman is planning to relocate to.
I recently put a computer together for them, and reinstalled their Verizon software and hardware as well. During my stay there and when calling [later] to see how the new computer was operating......they informed me of no disconnects and downloading speeds were good.

Hey,JohnGfun

I assume you typo-ed "hot" when you meant "not" ?
What are your download and upload speeds ? ......just curious.
How do you measure your dsl speed?

If you care to, try this site: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Well, I'm here and have a Phantom DSL line with Verizon!! (am using Vonage for Phone)

Hooked up Saturday evening and the first half of the week was terrible.... disconnects, slow speeds, etc. I called Verizon Wednesday and complained, they put in a service call after the tech checked my line and saw the 200K speed I was getting. Evidently, the call worked, as just now, speakeasy tells me I have 1272K down and 348K upload speed... Not bad for $30/month!!!

Just finished wiring the CAT5 to the Directivos so they're seeing each other too... (have them hacked to 4.01 for the HMO). Life is good!

I will come nowhere near my connection at work though, I did Speakeasy there and got 98000K down and 10000K up... wow!!

I live about 10 miles outside Atlantic City ... infospeed.verizon.net tells me that I am getting 2265 Mb down. No disconnects ever, maybe half a dozen service outages in the 18 months I've had DSL. Not bad for $29.99/mo.

(Note that I've never had Comcast internet to compare.)

OK, I'm now using Comcast for my internet.... Verizon started crapping out again shortly after my last post, and after getting a tech out to check the line, they reveal that my address is only capable of 768/128 service, so they change me to that. All was good for a couple of days and the dropping connections started yet again. I was getting steady 720/130 connections, but my wife and I just got tired of resetting the DSL modem about twice a day. Particularly a pain when we have Vonage and a lot of inbound calls were being bounced to her cell phone (the network unavailable forward number I have set with Vonage).

So, after griping at Verizon once again and finding out that my 1 year committment isn't set until 30 days in, I'm now a Comcast customer for Broadband. My first Speakeasy bandwidth test revealed 6Mb down and 368k up. Kinda funny how internet plus basic cable is cheaper than just internet with Comcast (particularly since I'm getting internet at $19.99 for the first 6 months)

Now to box up Verizon's modem and send it back to 'em....
