EchoStar quarterly profit rises on tax benefit, tops view

Satellite television services provider EchoStar Communications Corp. said second-quarter net profit rose to $856 million, or $1.89 per basic share, from $85 million, or 18 cents per basic share, in the year-earlier quarter, helped by a tax benefit of $593 million, or $1.31 a share. Excluding one-time items, the company would have earned 58 cents a share, topping the average forecast for earnings of 44 cents a share of analysts polled by Thomson First Call. Revenue for the period rose 18% to $2.1 billion, in line with the First Call forecast.

Of note in the SEC filing is that E-10 is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2006.
