Top 10 Web fads

Internet phenomena. Memes. Grist for the e-mail forwarding mill. Whatever you call them, Web fads are entertaining, unintended consequences of life on the World Wide Web. Once the masses could put anything online easily, they turned up weird fetishes, hilarious parody, jaw-dropping narcissism, and moments of brilliance. And over the past 10 years, some of these ideas broke through to the mainstream. Whether it was dancing hamsters, a kid enjoying his day as a Jedi Knight, or the sudden ability to publish your thoughts online with just a few simple clicks, the following 10 Web fads still make us laugh, make us wonder, or make us feel guilty enough to update our blogs.

Hmm ... never heard of any of these (except for the dancing baby). Hardly what I'd call "Internet phenomena" - more like a CNET reporter who spent too much time surfing the net.

I’ve head of the all except #3, but they only one I actually ‘participated’ in was Jib Jab. Gregg and Evan, the two guys that did the This Land parody and the follow up are truly creative and talented. I’ve looked though some of the other stuff on there, but the three election animations are the best IMO. The most over rated on the list, Blogger. I have never had a blog and never will. Honestly I think the whole blog fad is the biggest waste of time that came out of the internet so far.

I’m trying this up in MS Word 2003, $10 says that at the end of the year when Office 2005/Office 12 comes out, the word ‘blog’ won’t have the little red squiggly underneath it by default. :) And I thought it was bad, when a few years ago the words/phrases ‘baby daddy’ and ‘baby momma’ were added to Webster’s.
