Google likely to broaden reach / IM system shows it's ready to take on media rivalsGoogle Inc. will make its first direct challenge to the broader communications industry today when it introduces an instant-messaging and voice communication service for personal computers.
The program, Google Talk, will allow its users to exchange text messages and converse through their computers with others at remote locations. What makes this interesting is that Google is using Jabber protocol, so there are already a variety of clients, including GAIM and Trillian Pro (but not Trillian) that will already support this.
