View Full Version : New to DirecTV: Protection plan??

My wife just got me a 2 room DirecTV package for Father's Day (did I mention that I love her?). She signed up for the one year protection plan at Best Buy, but can cancel that in 30 days. We usually don't sign up for such things when we buy electronics, because either the equipment is bad out of the box and covered by waranty, or will take more than one year to fritz out anyway. Add to this that we got a super sweet deal (about $50 installed for 2 rooms), so if one of the receivers dies on us I don't feel like we're out a lot of money.

So I bring my first post to the assembled wisdom/experience of this forum: should we cancel the protection plan, or is it a good idea to keep it? Is there anything inherent in the equipment that needs a month or two to shake out? I guess I'm asking what people's personal experiences are within the first year? Thanks,

Christopher

Welcome to DBSTalk, Christopher! :hi:

My advice - run back to Best Buy right this very second...no I mean right now...don't finish reading :D and cancel that plan. It's 100% pure additional profit for BB, and you don't need it. If your receivers are going to die, they are going to die long before the first year is up. Just my opinion, though.

I agree 100%. There is nothing "shady" or illegal about those service plans. However, they are HUGE moneymakers for the dealers because the percentage of customers who ever need service on their equipment is infinitessimal.

I agree somewhat, but since you got a great deal and it is the beginning of lightning season and lightning/surges are usually covered in these protection plans ....... Get my drift ?
