Is it possible to make a dish out of clear plastic?(like soda bottle plastic) So that it wouldn't be so obvious on a roof

I don't think so. Reason I say this is because they make plastic covers for your dish (things like sports teams and american flags ) that have no effect on the signal.
You can paint it to match the color of your roof. Just make sure it is not a metalic paint. That or put it where you can't see it. :)

Remember that the reason the dish exists is to reflect and focus RF radiation to the LNB. RF radiation (which includes visible light) tends to go though the same things. So, generally, if visible light goes through it, so does the satellite signal. The best you can do is a wire mesh antenna. (Think microwave oven window)

I got a flier from one of my suppliers a while back about a transparent dish, but don't recall who it was from.
The site below does list a transparent dish...

A google of "Transparent satellite dish" reveals quite a few, but most appear to be in Europe.
Here's one http://www.pulsat.com/satellite/site/details.php?product_id=329
Yes it is possible and has been done. Years back I remember a product I believe called the Clearial, it was a glass dish with fine wire embeded to reflect the signal. At a distance it disappeared, I just think it was too expensive for practical application and disappeared from the market.

I remember watching one of those "X planes" shows on the old Discovery Wings channel where they talked about a AF attempt to build an invisible plane with clear wings and such. They ended up concluding that it was more visible than just painting the plane plain old gray.
There was a pick here once of a guys who painted his dishes the same colors as the shingles on his roof. hehe. looked pretty good.

Whatever happened to that mesh dish idea that Dish Network had for the SuperDish? Could the same be done with the 18 inch dish?

The mesh Super Dishes were junk. They drop signal CONSTANTLY.

Are you speaking of this Superdish?

It never made it to production. It was a concept AFAIK.
A clear dish would only be clear until it gets dirty.

If you're ashamed to have a dish on your roof, you might be a yankee cableboy.
If you're not planning to add dishes at 61.5W, 105W, 121W, 129W, or 148W, you might be a yankee cableboy.
If your wife doesn't like a dish on the roof, you might be a henpecked yankee cableboy.
