The difference is the business model. Sky Angel is a ministy and their goal isn't to make a buck. Their goal is to spread the Word.
Sky Angel as a concept goes back to Bob Johnson's vision in early 1980's. Dominion was among the orignial DBS aplicants.

Maybe it is to cover their costs. I think they were charging $9 for a good while for it and wanted to give the public some basic offerings too. For what you get for $15 its not that bad of a deal at all.

And then there are those of us who got in on the Lifetime Subscription.

IMHO, the addition of FNC, HGTV, TLN and the 2 Hallmark channels assures the continuation of SkyAngel. I now find that we rarely view the local broadcast channels that we receive via the rooftop antenna. Maybe we'll just give that metal dinosaur the heave ho.
I may reconsider SA independent sales as well. I'd considered it in the past but the paperwork seemed too daunting considering the disinterest I perceived among fellow Christians. Now, when I mention that SA carries FNC and the Hallmarks, the response is excitement.

Overall I believe the changes (especially the addition of FNC which is popular amongst most conservatives) help more than they hurt. There was a certain level of shock when religious channels were removed to make room for the "family channels", and many subscribers who take SkyAngel along side of DishNetwork service see duplication. But it is a decent service.

We bought a Lifetime "way back when" (less than $300). My teenagers were constantly grumbling that it was a waste of money because Praise TV, TV-U & Radio-U were the only programs worth watching/listening to. Despite my previously hopeful predictions, I still had to be "Gestapo Mom" to guard against inappropriate network programs.
Since then, Safe TV and Guardian have both added a much wider variety of family programing. Spirit replaced Praise and the kids like it more. Those factors and the addition of HGTV, FNC, and the Hallmarks have finally put Sky Angel on top in our home.
Occasionally there is a movie on one of the Hallmarks that I wouldn't want some of the kids to watch so I've set my parental controls so tight that nothing slips by (so far). The "worst" program thus far doesn't even compare to the offensiveness of some of the networks' TV previews, commercials (Herbal Essence shampoo comes to mind), and unnecessarily detailed news coverage. During the philandering Bill Clinton fiasco, we didn't dare turn on the news for fear of being forced to give a premature sex ed lesson to our four year old.
There's no doubt in my mind that the positive points to Sky Angel's programming changes far outweigh any potential negatives.

Has anyone heard if SA is still going to launch their own satellite in the next few years?

Ya, I remember watching the SA version of "Behind the Scenes" and they were talking about launching their own satellite. The only think I don't like about SA is the frequent turnover of channels to it's lineup. I know they are restricted by bandwidth, but you kinda get used to those channels being there and then they're gone and something new is there. I wish they could keep the channels they have dropped and still add the new ones. They're own satellite would solve that I think.
