I looking mostly at Don when I make this post but anyone is welcome to comment (otherwise I would have justed PMed him).

What or Is there any good video editing software that is free or cheap. I'm looking to take video off the DVR and edit out commercials and possibly burn to DVD. (I just got the new HDD for my TiVo)

I currently have Nero and BenQ but I'm not sure if either of these do video edits.

Moviemaker is free and I've used it for simple stuff, like what you described. It has a nice video capture program for your DV camcorder. When it comes to pulling video programs off your DVR - TIVO, I'm not sure how you plan to do that. The file structure is alien to any editing software I know of.
But, when you complete your edit and render the final avi file in moviemaker, you would then load that into some DVD authoring software. Build the menus or set it for auto play, and then burn the DVD.

What I use here is in a whole other league. Sony Vegas 6 and DVD Architecture 3.0. I settled on this because it does everything I need and the learning curve (for editors) was much faster than the other products I tried. I also use an older linear editing package for dealing with analog video. That was an expensive system in it's day but I still use it for editing betacam SP projects.

Here's an idea if you are needing to do a simple conversion and are not too worried about quality. Play the video from your TIVO and hard wire the audio/video to a capture card that will create the avi file of the program from TIVO playback. From there you can begin to edit. Capturing comes in two flavors- analog cards (poor) and feeding the analog into a camcorder and use that to convert to 1394 and onto a 1394 card. I have used this method and it works well too.

Good, moviemaker is already loaded on my computer. I'm going to FTP the files from the TiVo to the HDD using a USB to ethernet connector (some work still to be done). There are some programs out there that convert the ty stream to more useful formats - tystudio is one of them.

I am in the process of taking out the commercials from last night's Lost episodes and then burning them on DVDs. However, I'm not sure that what I am doing is applicable for you. I recorded the programs using the DVR in my XPMC laptop. To speed things up, and to clear room on the laptop for more recording, I have transferred the files to my desktop. When I was home for lunch I got things started, and at this point I am experimenting to see what will work best. I am using Intervideo WinDVD Creator to do the editing, and I left it autodetecting scenes. When I get home I'll see how it did. If that works, great. Otherwise I will have to cut out the commercials "by hand."
