I'm in the New York market and currently receive "locals" in HD -- that is when the local network is broadcasting an HD program. I already have "HD Locals" in my opinion.
Now I read that by the end of this year they will be launching HD Locals in 12 markets, NY included... what's the story? MPEG4 format only? Will there be more "local" channels than just ABC/NBC/CBS in HD? NY has the following normal definition "local" channels:
ABC, CBS, NBC, WNEW (FOX5) WWOR, WPIX (UPN9 AND WB11, RESPECTIVELY) AND PBS WNET, Channnel 13. Will these locals be offered in MPEG4 HD? I know WNET is offered in high def on Cablevision.
Thanks for any input!
Dave
According to the scuttle-butt DirecTV will add "all" the other NY Locals that are broadcasting DTV starting sometime before the end of the year. This should include NY TV stations who are now broadcasting HDTV in addition of other DTV formats. I am in the LA DMA so I don"t know the deatils about NY. I expect to get all of the independant and PBS locals stations DTV offerings. That includes KTLA and KCET (the main LA PBS station).

Thanks, Bill. I'm sure the big LA/NY markets offer similar programming... That'll be nice to finally have them ALL in digital and hopefully HD when they finally run w/ it.
I know our local here in NY, channel 9, utilizes the YES (NY Yankees sports channel) crew and equipment when they broadcast the games for the NY audience w/o cable or satellite capabilities. I wonder if UPN9 will then offer the HD programming that YES does for the games. We'll see!

The Rumor going around my HSP plant, is that by the end of the year most of the markets, not just LA/NY will be having the locals in HD. Considering I'm in Pittsburgh, and it took about 2 to three years for SD locals to come to Pgh, I'm guessing that the major markets will be launch at about the same time.

I'm an thinking about dumping Dish and moving over to Direct TV.
I am in the LA Market, what HD Locals are offered over the Satellite.
I have a antenna right now for my HD locals, but I have major multipath issues with ABC-7

DirecTV carries KABC-DT (their HD channel) on channel 87. They also have KCBS-DT on 81, KNBC-DT on 83 and KTTV-DT on 89. Now word yet on the additional LA DT channels.

Does anyone know if one of those 12 Major DMAs going to be Washington, D.C.? I just saw a post that Detroit is coming on-line very soon and that local Best Buys are selling the new H20 HD Receivers. Are they a beta test site for the 12 DMAs, or does that mean that the other 11 are coming soon to a market near you?
Yes, DC is one of the first 12. Detroit is the first one. Hopefully not much longer for DC.

But just because the locals will be offered in HD to the 12 markets, it doesn't mean that all of the local programming will be in HD... think of all of the tv reruns, etcetera... I imagine the local, live sports programming will be in HD as often as possible and that will be nice to see. Most will be just Digital.
I think we'll see many of those 150 "national" channels, i.e., the cable and satellite stations, going to HD before the over the air locals do primarily because most of the local viewers are stuck with antennas. Not all of those viewers have the HD receiving equipment. Remember we HD viewers are still the minority in TV viewer land... Unfortunately. Time will heal our pains.

Is there a list of the 12 markets somewhere?

Long term, the DBS market is in trouble since there is NO way they can compress that much bandwidth without making everything HD lite. UNLESS, they figure out a way to transmit 6X the bandwidth that they do now.

Your point about icky PQ is well taken though as both satellite and cable participate in compression well beyond the bounds of reasonable.

I don't know... they might not be able to offer competitive services in other things such as VOD, Data Services, etc. But, when it comes to TV they will be able to compete... at least DirecTV will. They will be moving nearly all of their channels over to MPeg4 eventually, and have several new satellites in the pipeline that will expand their capacity dramatically. There is a certain point where they will quickly run out of content that can be braodcast in HD, and with the new satellites, I think they will reach that point before running out of bandwidth.

From DirecTV
The first group of markets to receive local HD channels via Spaceway F1 includes New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco, Dallas, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Detroit, Houston and Tampa. These markets represent nearly 36 million homes or 32.8 percent of all U.S. TV households.
