View Full Version : bypass DVR on 942?
I'm a new dish subscriber and new to the 942 and I also had a 625 installed. I'm really dissappointed with the dvr picture quality especially on Standard channels on both. The pics are fuzzy and the more I watch the more I get frustrated. I asked in a previous post if there is any way to by pass the DVR and receive the video signal directly? As I said previously, I had cable with a HDTV receiver hooked up to a stand alone Tivo and a 36 inch with a standalone Replay and I didn't care the picture quality on either but I do have to say it's better than what I'm now getting with dish.

This is normal with a new install.
You TV needs tweaked. It sounds like you just switched from Cable.
Cable has different TV settings that DBS which is 100% digital.
Adjust your Sharpness, Color ect. . . .
There are other threads that can help, maybe CD Digital video estentials or others.
It took me a while, but my Pic is far better than any Cable. At times , it think the SD channels are as good as DVD quality, you just need to tweak.
Some even have TV settings for SD channels, and HDTV channels. Its all in your TV.
PS yes there are some bad channels on Dish like some of the locals. The quality can change from day to day as they change compression levels. But I think a little tweaking on on the settings on your TV can do wonders.

By “fuzzy”, I assume you mean lack of detail in the picture. This is caused by the economics of providing TV service, not the DVR technology. The 942 is capable of providing picture quality beyond what 20/20 vision can see. All TV service providers have a limited amount detail (technically bandwidth) and it is far more profitable to spread the total amount of detail (bandwidth) over many channels then devote it to just a few channels. Each TV service provider handles the number of channels vs. picture quality tradeoff differently. Dish seems to be in about the middle.
I completely agree with the_bear: picture quality depends on the settings in the 942, how it is connected to the TV and the TV's settings, as well as the particular channel.

... if there is any way to by pass the DVR and receive the video signal directly? No. The DVR functions do not affect PQ. The digital signal from the satellite is recorded then played back unaltered.
oh, and...
Picture quality of local channels through the satellite is lousy because of over-compression (trying to get a lot of channels into limited bandwidth) as was previously stated. OTA picture quality is as good as other OTA receivers.
The DVR picture quality is the same as the original (excellent for satellite HD, variable for OTA digital/HD and satellite SD, lousy for satellite locals).
