View Full Version : Dish High Def Questions
This may have been answered before, but I could not find it.
I heard to receive HD programming in addition to regular programming with Dish requires TWO dishes?
Also, if anyone knows, how does the PQ of Dish HD compare to OTA?
Thanks.

Depends on what satellite locations you are currently getting.
If you are getting at lease 119 & 110 you will be OK...But...
If you want the old VoOm Channels and the Demo Channel you need 2 dishes.
Don't know about PQ...I don't have an OTA connected.

I believe the CBS network HD feeds are also on a different satellite (same as Voom), if you qualify for that of course.
As for quality... My local stations are all digital, and most of them also in HD when the programming is... and my OTA HD is usually much better than the HD on Dish.
Not because Dish HD is bad... but because the OTA channels simply don't have the same bandwidth issues that Dish/DirecTV/cable have... so the local stations can turn their compression down and use as much of their bandwidth as they want.
When a similar program (Monday Night football on ABC vs Sunday night football on ESPN for instance) can be compared... it is a tough call as to how much better the OTA vs Dish is, since Dish HD is pretty good... but for my money the OTA is still better.
Note that usually you can't do direct comparisons because it is rare so far to have a similar HD program on an OTA channel at the same time an HD channel is showing something so I can flip back and forth.. in the rare instance that something is on to compare, I'm usually engrossed in what I'm watching so I forget to flip the channels!

I can only compare Dish's CBSHD to the CBS OTA, and they both look the same to me (except for when Dish's CBS feed was having problems last week). Both are far superior to what I had gotten for Network HD on Comcast.

Thanks. It's all excellent. There is no difference in the HD PQ as transmitted, just in quality of some of the source content, particulary with some of the old movies, but original HD content (HDNet, Discovery, Equator, HDNews & others) is stunning.
IMO, HD is a quantum leap...

The Voom channels are on 129. If you can receive 129, you will not need a second Dish unless you want CBS. Rather, all you will need is a DISH 1000. In our market, we are supposed to be using DISH1000s for all Voom installs.

There is a difference, OTA is wider bandwidth and therefore higher quality, having said that, I doubt if you can see the difference.

You can notice a difference on very good TV's and highly trained eyes. For one, you'll see less artifacts on OTA channels as they aren't as compressed as much as HD feeds sent out by satellite or cable.
