View Full Version : Why not split screen instead of PIP

This has been discussed a little before and some TVs support it with two inputs, BUT:

Why does the 942 not support split screen instead of just PIP? IMO it's better than obscuring part of one picture, and for sports regular PIP is very disruptive to the larger picture.

One would think that it's simply a window sizing issue to support split screen and could be done in a software update (perhaps as the result of the third press of the PIP button).

Due to aspect ratio, it may be necessary to have some bands at top and bottom of the split screen result but that's fine with me.

Yep, there was a short thread on this in August, but I think it focused more on a potential work around with TV's that have that capability.

I think a split screen feature on the 942 would be very cool and is a great idea! They could add it to the PIP button as one more step at the end of the sequence as you cycle through pushing the button. Rather than PIP On --> PIP Large --> PIP Off, it could be PIP On --> PIP Large --> Split Screen --> PIP Off. Then you could select which picture has sound by pushing right or left, similar to the new Dish Home page.

They're supposed to be watching this board, maybe this idea could make it on their radar?

I agree with this suggestion! I would love to be able to watch two football games at the same time without hooking up to a second input on my TV and using the "2" remote.

I agree with all of the posts on this thread so far - actually I'm pretty disappointed that the 942 doesn't have this feature (not having a 942 yet I just assumed that it might...).

My Gateway DLP has some GREAT PIP options (how's that for an obscure TV - yeah, that might not have been a great decision - good TV though).

I can cycle through about 5 different PIP options - some are worthless (the 3 or 7 channel cycle stuff) but there are two different split screen modes and then the traditional PIP (which you can move around on the screen anywhere you want - pretty cool).

The one thing that was mentioned about just moving the sound left or right is what I don't have in split screen. If I do the "swap" button, it actually switches the two pictures (i.e., the sound is always with the left screen).

Here's the coolest part (I don't know if anyone has seen this on other TVs) - There are two separate headphone jacks on the TV itself - in PIP modes, you can actually have the sound for either source going through one of the headphone jacks (or both). This means that my wife can be watching something and then I can watch something else with the headphones on (I always end up wearing the headphones in the family...).

Sounds geeky but has come in handy just a few times - mostly when I want to watch a game while I'm working on the computer and don't want to move upstairs to the other TV.

Yeah - I wish companies got a little more creative with features.... Some of them just seem to be common sense (like the ring they finally put on that stringy thing you pull on to open the concentrated orange juice containers... you know what I'm talking about...)
