Hey everyone - just thought I'd share something I noticed last night.
So this weekend Showtime has a free preview weekend. I decided to add the showtime channels to my favorites, to see what's on. As I was scrolling through, I decided to record some shows -- and IT WOULDN'T LET ME! I was shocked that they would know that I don't subscribe to those channels and lock me out of recording them, and I had a horrible realization -- the box is able to "lock" certain channels or shows and keep us from recording them!
Anyways, if anyone has heard of this or has run into this issue, feel free to provide any info you have on it.
(BTW: what I tried is to put a manual recording in place for the weekend for a few hours on the showtime channels. It let me do this, but who knows if it will actually record. I can report back next week.)

I'm assuming you tried other channels too or is it just showtime? I know my box was not recording last night did not have time to play with or figure out why. Was wondering if it had something to do with my recent resets.

Yeah - I tried to record other channels at the same time on HBO (channels that I do get) and those were fine.
Any chance the "locks or limits" were set? The reason I ask that, granddaughter was over the past weekend, I had "parentaled" (new word) the heck out of it including the "no access to unrated content". Do you realize how much content (like Truth or Consequences and Basketball games) are in that bucket. I could not for the life of me figure out why they were locked. Silly grandpa, didn't know a basketball game was so offensive.

I know this isn't the same thing you are talking about but it does do with recording.
My wife used to have a Season Pass for Simply Quilts that was on HGTV and DIY. When we switched to the R15, she tried to do the equivilant. However, it would only allow her to record one on the series link and the other she had to go in and manually record.
This is also the case for Charmed that is on TNT during the week and on the WB on Sundays. You have to pick one or the other and then pick a manual record for the one that doesn't have the series link. OH and how about a show like That 70's Show that is in syndication on our local Fox network. Then it's on at it's regular first run time on Wednesday nights. Guess what? Yep, I get all of the shows, repeat or first run, even though the series link says it is only supposed to be recording First Run. I have already said that I will be returning the R15 and getting an R10. This is just a chance for me to vent a little bit more before I send it back.
This receiver needs to gain some more "intelligence" before I can make it a primary receiver for my family. Hell, I may even hold onto the receiver for about 6-9 months and try it again but there is no way it will be active anytime before June of next year. I have missed too many programs already because of the incompetency of the R15.

Unfortunately - not. No locks or limits were set. I tried several different shows, programs, movies. None of the content on these channels was recordable.
Has anyone else tried this? The showtime free weekend is nation-wide I believe. I just want to make sure it's not me. :)

You should also check to see how many recordings are listed in the To Do List. If you have too many it will not record anything else. I think the max is 100. If you record something like friends it will rapidly fill your List and leave no room for new programs.

Face it, you can't record the Showtime free weekend until the weekend. Maybe not then either. That remains to be seen.
Why would any DVR prevent you from recording a channel you don't receive? If I want to record a blank screen I should be able to record a blank screen. If my damn disk space after all.
:D With non-TIVO indicator I might add.
Note Smilie indicating in jest placed there for assistance to the reader
(now we're having fun, more like family, disagree but don't throw things)

I have also tried to set up a recording for this weekends free preview and had the same thing happen to me. So I tried to see if it was for all shows (non showtime) and every other program I set up I had no problem.

Has anyone called DTV and verified that the R15 will be able to access Showtime this weekend when it's free? I don't want to appear as a negative nelly but that one item could be something that wasn't fully tested during their beta tests.
Sorry I can't help, I get Showtime.

I agree. My R15 is not smart enough to know what channels you receive when setting up a Find By. I can't believe that it's smart enough to know that when setting up any other type of recording. I think there must be something else at play here. What that could possibly be, I'm not sure.
