I'm looking to upgrade my hd receiver to the HR10-250. After looking on the DirecTV web-site they have it listed for $449 (after the $200 rebate). The only place I could find it on the web-site has the dish included in the package. Didn't a lot you purchace this reciever for a couple hundred dollars cheaper? Did you get it directly from directv? Thanks for any help!

Yeah, just call the customer retention number and try to get a deal.

There is a big long thread dedicated to this here: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=270045&page=5

I called Directv and they transferred me to the install and support department. They gave my a price of $649 with a $200 mail in rebate. How are you guys getting these $499 deals with $200 reabate and $200 instant credit?

By calling them several times and finding the one who would accept to give it.
I know that sucks, but that is the way they work.

I called the retention department today and was given a price of $399 with the instant rebate included in that price. They said the "normal price" was $699. According to them the $399 price is the cheapest that they have sold the unit!?

I wouldn't buy it, because there's no guarantee DirecTv will reimburse you or give you an even swap with the new mpeg 4 DVR. The installers I talked to heard nothing to support the reimbursement rumors and recommended I didn't buy the HD Tivo.

I just contacted the movers program about getting this DVR as part of the move. I was quoted $599 with a $200 rebate. Directv will come out and install a new AT-9 dish free and also provide an SD receiver for free also.

From early August until November 5, DTV offered the HR10-250 unit for $299 with a $100 mail in rebate. My personal experience was that the regular DTV customer service was talking something in the area of $599 with no rebate.
I called the customer retention number and got the $299 + $100 MIR + $5 off the HD service for 6 months + $10 off HBO for 12 months. So, the actual cost turned out to be $49 + $14.95 S&H. The deal included installation of the 3 LNB dish as well. I incurred an obligation for a two year service committment with the purchase, but this is amortized over two years at $12.50/mo. so it's no big deal.
Sometime before the official end of the promotion, people started reporting that the "deal" was no longer available. There have been sporatic reports from some that they were able to get the "deal". This is a problem that DTV management needs to fix, they run the business like a garage sale and a lot of what people get is based on who they call and how nice they talk.
Right now you can go to BB, CC or any of the online retailers and get the unit for $599 with a $200 MIR. Again, some of the folks on the boards are claiming all kinds of special deals.
As for what's going to happen going forward, no one knows. Clearly, DTV ought to understand that they need to treat the people who bought this equipment right, but DTV seems to be suffering from a corporate form of bipolar disease. I think it's caused by a combination of the new management and the heavy competition from the cable companies.
From my point of view, the HR10-250 is a great box. I use an indoor Silver Sensor antenna and get all my locals with 70+ signal. If I lose the distant network feeds I'll spend my money on a good antenna before I accept anything short of a TiVo killer HD with LiL from DTV.
Bottom line, the current BB & CC net cost for the HR10-250 seems pretty fair. I'm tempted to get a second one myself (hooking it up is a problem I have to overcome first). The PQ is great, as my stepdaughter said on Thanksgiving "Look, football on High Definition, let's count the pimples on the necks of the players". For sports it can't be beat and it really adds to the experience in most other genres.
Hope this helps.
You can thank aggressive deal shoppers and fraudsters^Wentrepreneurs on eBay selling retention-baiting scripts for the short-lived $299 HD-DVR.

I just ordered the HR10-250 from D* for net $190 ($500 less $200 rabate less $50 credit less $5 off HD package for 6 months less $5 off standard package for 6 months) before tax and shipping. That includes a new dish and installation.
