Competition gives pause to DVR pioneer, but CEO says new features will help firm thrive

Los Angeles — TiVo Inc. revolutionized the way people watch television.
But the company that gave viewers the power to skip commercials and watch favorite programs whenever they want now finds itself struggling to remain a relevant part of the business it created.
Stiff competition from satellite and cable companies rolling out cheaper versions of TiVo's pioneering digital video recorder technology has TiVo on the ropes.
Last week, it reported a $14.2 million quarterly loss and a gloomier-than-expected outlook for its current quarter. Its stock plummeted. Investors and industry analysts called for management to do more to stop the bleeding of red ink.
