View Full Version : Tuner Problems
I just installed a second line for my new R15 DVR. Not a problem yet with my unit:lol: Anyhoo....I hooked up my second line and went to the menu and ran a test to make sure the second tuner was working and it failed. I flip-floped the lines to make sure they were both working and same thing happend. Wasn't sure if DirecTv has to "activate" the second tuner. I don't have my phone line hooked up yet and was thinking that might be the problem.
I also got the the "you have your setting at 3 lnb's and we found 3 lnb's" message that someone else was talking about. I just said ignore and continue after trying the test two more times.
Like the user name suggests...I am new to DVR's. Basically bought the new R15 because of the larger HD and faster channel surfing. My brother has the H10 and is real happy with it other than the slow channel surfing. I also noticed his fan is much louder. As a matter of fact....I haven't even heard the fan on the R15.....
Anyway....I'm rambling. Help me out if you can.
First, how did you hook up the second line? Is it a direct run straight from the dish? You can NOT use a splitter, they do not work for satellite tv.
Assuming that you did run the line straight from the dish, with both lines connected to your R15, go into setup, then into satellite setup, then check the signal strength. In that screen there are options to switch between tuners. Note the signal strengths of the various transponders on the first tuner, then select the second tuner. Note the signal strengths there. All transponders should be very close to the same between the two tuners. If one is significantly lower than the other, switch the two cables, and repeat the process. You should see the problem move from one tuner to the other.
If the problem does move when you switch the cables, you either have a bad lnb, a bad multiswitch (if you have one), or a bad coax run. If the problem does not move, then you have a bad dvr.

i have seen several post regarding the 2nd tuner issue. it appears that in most if not all cases, a simple "soft reboot" (using the red reset button behind the access card door), fixed the problem.
as for the quietness of the R15, it is in fact quieter than my DSR 708........ also, the fan on the R15 only comes on "on demand" and does not run 24/7.:)
Thanks db54, that worked like a charm. No problems.

I think if it doesn't detect anything on that tuner on boot up it shuts the tuner down. I posted about this way back when I was first setting up my DVR. Kind of a Pita, I wonder if the Manual says anything about it? I would read it but that goes against everything I stand for ;)

Kanyon71, i believe your post was one of the ones i read:) ..........also, i don't see any info in the manual for it. as for the manual, that could use and "update" as well:D

glad it worked:) What i should have mentioned, if you didn't already know it, is when resetting, the guide data will be extremely slow in re-populating........it may take a day or so for it to completely fill in..........it does appear though, that when "soft rebooting", the data seems to come back quite quicker than when "resetting" from within the menu.
Welcome to the forum;)

Hopefully they fix the DVR before the manual lol
