MY daughter and I watch a lot of public TV shows and animal shows that she loves to record and watch over again. It would be nice for us to be able to hook up a DVD recorder or external harddrive to hold the content for later watching on her TV in her play room.

What options exist for us? I'd guess some of the contact on Public TV isn't copyrighted but some of the Discovery stuff we watch would be.

I'm currently using the component video output on the device for connection to my receiver just because it's nice and easy to not have to change the input on my TV from DVI to component to switch from DVD to Sat viewing.

THanks for all your help.

Get a dvd recorder with a hard drive, that will allow you to transfer shows from the composite TV2 (yellow, red, and white cables) output to the dvd recorder. The hard drive on the recorder will allow you to edit commericals out and pick a few episodes to put on the disc then burn something that will play on most dvd players.

Good luck, its easier than it sounds and you daughter will love it

Any way to connect the two and automate the recording a little bit?

Finally (though off topic here) any hope for a functional use on the USB port?

There is. It's called "PocketDish" (http://www.pocketdish.com). What you want to do is exactly what the PocketDish was made for. Unfortunately, they are a bit pricey.

Made the mistake of leaving the mailed advert from Dish on the kitchen counter. Now the wife is expecting Santa to leave a Pocketdish under the tree.

I am using a dvd recorder without hard drive. It can be used just like a VCR, with timed recording of the composite output from the 942. Of course the 942 has to be in dual mode (otherwise hd output is squished on composite) and TV2 turned on to the channel you want to record (or get one of the few DVD recorders that control a satellite box). The DVD recorder allows some rudimentary editing.

No doubt the HDD/DVD combination is better (and $150+ more for already-outdated technology). I'm ok with using the DVD recorder as VCR.

It's pretty easy either way. Enjoy!
