Hmm, looks like there may end up being such a thing as a 109 SuperDISH. I wonder what they're going to use it for.

Interesting they will have essentially an entire Ku satellite worth of bandwidth there. This appication appears to just be a specification of control signals uplink and downlinks.

I am betting on smaller market HD LIL. If they put the larger markets on E10 and 61.5 spots and 129 Dish 1000 and fill in smaller market HD LIL with these "SuperDishes" which really are not that much larger than the DIRECTV Ka HD dishes.

I would like to see the type of satellites they plan for these Aux slots. The 109W satellite application is 32 TP circular polarization. Looks like strait CONUS.

DIRECTV is adapting the multibillion dollar Spaceway plan for LIL HD for all the markets, I bet Dish is going to get HD LIL for less than 1 billion. Yeah different markets will need different superdishes, but that is just a stocking issue, not really a big deal.

I believe the extended Ku band is either 2 or 3 times the bandwidth of regular Ku band like what Dish has at 105 W. Dish has also leased the regular Ku band capacity at 118.7 W from Telesat and this will be provided possibly from AMC-16 if the FCC approves moving it to that location or Anik F3 when it is launched in late 06'.

Now Dish just needs to start making standalone DP FSS LNBs... then many will be happy...

Allocated 2-250 mhz downlink segments and 1-250 mhz uplink segment. So, they would have to use 2 uplink centers.

A possible use for this bandwidth is backhauls. Of course, one actually has to purchase and launch a satellite to use this spectrum. :)

They have a contract to build the satellite (http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/servlet/ib.page.FetchAttachment?attachment_key=457320). The heavily redacted contract is on the FCC web site. It is also interesting to read the satellite application documents. They seem very concerned that it be considered an "international" service with uplinks in Mexico and Peru. Although they have asked for a waiver of some sort for an US uplink.
