There I was, drinking lunch today in a bar. ESPN on the telly, but I'm primarily paying attention to my spouse. When I notice a PocketDish ad on the television. This brought several thoughts and questions to mind.

I pointed out the thing was vaporware months ago. I was right; even Dish didn't have them. Now apparently they've realized they haven't sold any and had better start advertising them. Pity it still hasn't occurred to them to put them in stores somewhere.
They must really be hurting on sales if they started advertising them two days before Christmas. You can't get it here in time for a gift!
Compounding that evidence, they sent mailers out last week too. Nice enough brochure, but again must've been an "oops!" moment for them.
But wait... ESPN at lunchtime? Why ESPN? Middle-aged men watch ESPN, not the younger set these devices are typically aimed at. After all, the ad stated "thousands of MP3s", never mentioned sports. Somebody screwed up their demographic analysis.
It gets stupider... If you watch ESPN, you watch... sports. How many people really want to either time-shift and watch a game days later or watch it on a 4" screen rather than a 42" screen?
And of course I'm still eagerly awaiting a 100GB model rather than the skimpy 30GB model.

Don't get me wrong - I like the idea of the PocketDish, especially the AV500e. I've blogged (http://bloggit.livejournal.com/13331.html) about it, analyzed (http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?p=462540&postcount=19) it, and compared (http://bloggit.livejournal.com/13331.html) it to others. I even posted a spreadsheet comparison of the media players here (http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?p=467814&postcount=11). What has me amazed is how clueless EchoStar and Archos can combine to be!
