Alright guys here it is. I have just left Comcast after 5 years and am about to lose my complimentary services :(. I want to transfer my existing setup to DirecTV. I have 5 rooms which are fed by one coax each. I need to know what it would take to hookup 4 of those rooms with SD boxes and the 5th with a dual tuned SD DVR. I know I’m going to need at least a 4x8 and a triple LNB. What would it take to go from the switch to the DVR and split it to feed both tuners? I hope I explained this well enough.

Thanks,

CGNM

You need a seperate line for a dvr--you can't just spilt it. You can also get a stacker/destacker, but it's expensive enough that you might as well switch to Dish instead and use their DishPro system.

So all of your existing coax runs go back to some common point. With a 4x8 or 5x8 multiswitch, you can feed one line to each of those 5 rooms, and everything, including one tuner in your dvr, will work just fine. To get the second tuner going in the dvr, you must run a second coax line from the multiswitch. As GeorgeLV noted, you can't use splitters.

You will need to run all 4 lines from the dish to the multiswitch, and I will assume the multiswitch will be installed wherever your existing coax runs go back to.

If your existing coax is not RG6, then you will probably want to replace it with RG6. RG59 does not work in many cases, especially longer runs.
