On New Year's Day, Viacom completed its transaction to separate
the company into two publicly traded entities: CBS Corporation
and the "new" Viacom.
Shares of the two companies commence trading on the New York
Stock Exchange today, under the symbols "CBS.A" (CBS Class A
common stock) and "CBS" (CBS Class B common stock) and "VIA"
(Viacom Class A common stock) and "VIA.B" (Viacom Class B
common stock).
CBS is comprised of the CBS TV network, UPN, CBS Radio, Viacom
Outdoor, Viacom Television Stations Group, Paramount Television,
King World, Simon and Schuster, Showtime and Paramount Parks.
CBS Corporation also will include the operations of CSTV Networks,
which the company is in the process of acquiring through a deal
expected to close this month.
Viacom is comprised of MTV Networks (MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon,
Nick at Nite, Comedy Central, CMT: Country Music Television,
Spike TV, TV Land and others), BET, Paramount Pictures,
Paramount Home Entertainment and Famous Music. Viacom also
has entered into an agreement to acquire DreamWorks SKG.
Viacom's acquisition of Dreamworks SKG is expected to be
completed in the first quarter of 2006.
The move to separate Viacom's businesses was announced in
June.
