View Full Version : HR10-250: Trouble switching between programs using "LiveTV" button

I recently added a HR10-250 DVR to replace a R10 DVR. We have noticed a very odd but intermittent problem using the LiveTV button on the remote. Normally, as I understand it, the LiveTV button should allow me to switch between the programs being received on the two tuners that are tuned to programs. However, sometimes when we press LiveTv, it does not switch between tuners but instead the "guide" comes up on the screen (?????). Press it again and the guide goes away. Very odd. If I press the "down" arrow key on the remote, it will switch between the two tuners with no problem or oddities. Sometimes it does this for a while and sometimes 10 minutes later the Live TV button works as I understand it should. I'm not sure if there is any correlation, but I have run a system test after that and noticed that one Sat tuner suddenly has no signal and there is an exclamation point inside a triangle next to it. (Interestingly, I could still use the down arrow key to switch between the two tuners even though it showed no signal on one of them). I run the test again, and then everything works fine...both Sat tuners have solid signal strengths in the 90s. Am I misunderstanding how LiveTV works on the HR10-250, am I doing something wrong or is this a known glitch for the HR10 or do I have a defective HR10 or some other problem with my dish?

Thanks for any help.

My understanding of that unit was that to switch between the two live signals, you use the down button as you described. The "Live TV" button, as I've understood it, is used to go directly to the live signal if you are watching a recorded program or navigating the menus, without having to go through the different menu levels to get back to the "watch live TV" option. It was never my understanding that the "Live TV" button was meant to be used for switching between the signals.

The "Live TV" button will toggle between the two tuners. I haven't had any problem with that on any of my units. On units with only 1 tuner enabled pressing "Live TV" over and over will just "bong" you and do nothing.

I'm not sure why you're getting a guide when pressing "Live TV". Do you have another remote you can try on that unit?

I sometimes have the same problem with my Phillips DVR. It only happens after I have used my universal remote. I believe that I don't have the proper code for the live TV button programmed into my universal remote. It works when I first try it and then it gets confused. I just hit the TIVO button and then hit "watch live TV" and the live TV button goes back to the way it's supposed to work. To sum it up it only seems to happen on the peanut remote after someone has previously used the universal remote. I have read about this on one of the TIVO boards but don't remember which one.

I've had this trouble intermittently with the hd-dvr. It seems to occur after it's been rebooted or reset for some reason - usually power failure. Might be due to both tuners being on the same channel? After a while (hour or 2?) it returns to normal. I haven't tracked down the cause. Since the trouble goes away relateively quickly I didn't place a high priority on it. I don't believe I've had this issue since I put the unit on a UPS.

I had this problem a few weeks ago. I was getting real frustrated with the guide popping up, but I do recall it being real simple to fix. I can't recall what I did to fix it though. :( I think I hit the right arrow (just to the left of the info button) and it returned to normal function. If that doesn't work try up arrow, down arrow and left arrow.I just can't remember what button it was. I know it was one of the buttons on the remote that fixed it. I didn't reboot or do anything in any of the menus. Let us know if you figure it out.

As I recall when I posted this question on the TivoCommunity forum, I was told that the problem has to do with software updates that are downloaded. I then noticed that I only seemed to have the problem after I received the downloads that also wiped out the 30 second skip feature. For me, it was simple enough to fix by simply pushing the Directv Central button, then live tv. I don't think there's anything wrong with your unit, just another (of many) anomolies.
