Does anyone have digital phone service? Our cable company just got it and says it hooks to your existing phone wiring and works just the same as your regular phone but through the cable service and you can keep your same number. I just wondered how this service worked and the quality of it compared to a convention telephone service.

At least the botch jobs I seen with Comcast this is how they do it.

It is a voip telephone system that they plug into a single jack and then go out back to your NID ( grey telephone box) disconnect the copper pair from your telephone company that allows the voip to provide a dial tone on all the jacks in the house that are wiried into that NID.

It really depends on there implentation of the service. Some digital phone service is great while others are just plain crap. Like anything the best thing to do is try to find someone who has it first in your area and see how the call quality is first then make a decision.

Who is your provider? Cox uses a different system.

Our provider is Mediacom. Their high speed internet service is great--much faster than DSL. The just rolled out the new phone service and a new HD package with local channels and a dual tuner HD/DVR receiver.

I don't know much about Mediacom but you might try www.broadbandreports.com

You have to really ask some questions before you buy "digital" telephone service.

Some important ones to ask are:

What happens if the power goes out?

MANY cable companies' telephone service will not work if YOUR power is out.

Some of their interface units have power backup but they are usually for 10 minutes or less.

What happens when you dial 911?

Many cable companies do not route you to the RIGHT 911 call center because of their routing system. In our area they route you to the call center where their head end is located (for me, it is in a different county).

Does Caller ID work correctly on your phone system?

And you need to get clarification on what they mean by "correctly" if they say it does. For our cable company "correctly" means that incoming caller ID works from their customers; "regular" telephone customer calls to your number may or may not identify correctly. The same may be true on outgoing calls.

I have Comcast Digital Phone Service and contrary to "Bill R's" post:

YES you do have true 911 service there is no ROUTING error!!

If the Power Goes out the Phone Still works, I had the power go out for 10 hours and guess what the Phone worked.

Caller ID- Works just like with the local telco(SBC)

The only diffrence between digital phone and the ILEC is the price. I saved 25 bucks by switching to Comcast digital phone and the voice quality is alot better and when I use dial up, I actually get a 53k Connection!!!(I have broadband though so its years too late.)

Digital Phone is a POTS service that is transffered by a Coax line thats all everything else is the same.
