in the dc area, the locals are now on their actual lower channels 4,5,7,9,20,etc vs 8075,...
how do they do that?

They can map the same A/V stream to as many channels as they want, without any serious impact on bandwidth. New software may have been needed to better handle entering the single- and double-digit channel numbers.

Open TV capable receivers have this---everywhere I believe. The resr of us are waiting.

Not everywhere. DISH is dribbling this out - allegedly deliberately.
They are using this software revision to add all the "side-satellite-ghetto" local stations to the IPGs on all LIL sets.
A lot of doofuses are going to see for the first time that they are paying for locat TV stations that they are not getting, thanks to the E* bait-and-switch program.
Those bozos, so the theory goes, are calling in to 800 333-DISH to get their free second dishes. So - the rollout of the software is being governed to prevent CSR overload.
So goes the theory. My theory: the hamster is overworked.

It works real good to enter a 1 or 2 digit channel, then press the "Select" to go right to your local channel, whether you are in the guide or watching another channel already.

I tried hitting 3 and select but it didn't do anything.

SParker, are your locals mapped to the single & double digit area of your guide? If not, it won't work.

I just tried it on a 301 with the local channel map upgrade. Hitting select after entering the channel number does nothing, you have to wait after entering 3.

Doesn't work here on the DC locals here in Manassas, VA yet. Did you get a software update or something that remapped the channels? I tried cycling the receivers on and off without any success. Also, the channel guide still lists them on 8075, etc. and mirrored on the 700 channels. Hitting "3" automatically takes me to "101."

yeah they are in the correct OTA numbers

Still no upgrade on my 3900 yet!

Don't know what to tell you, but it works great on my 4900 (upgraded) (1 or 2 digit, select takes me right to my locals).

I was not clear I guess. I realize an upgrade is required but I did not think it was regionally applied.

As of morning of 1 July, none of my three Dishplayers have received this upgrade...

From what I understand they're doing the changover in small batches by receiver number so in case there's any glitches it won't effect everyone.
I installed a 501/301 last week and the 301 had the upgrade, the 501 didn't.

Any place where we can find the rollout schedule?
Still not in NY DMA.....

As of right now, the only receivers that are to receive this upgrade are the 3900, 4900, 301, and 501. The upgrade should be rolled out by the end of July.

Just would like to say "Hello" to all, Im new to this forum. I have a question on my locals that now start in the single digits. I have a screen on some of my locals telling me to call for a free dish. Has anyone else had this come up, if so did you call for your free dish, and was it really free.
Chris Blount

Hello Draconian and welcome to DBSTalk! :hi:
Yes it's true. You can get a free Dish installed. Most likely you have locals in your area that cannot be received using your one dish. If you make the call, an installer will come out and install the Dish for free. No strings attached. I highly recommend doing this since you may need the second Dish to receive Hi Definition programming. Also make sure that they install a SW64 switch.

Thanks Chris!
You mentioned a SW64 what would this do or allow me to do. And what about this DishPro stuff Im hearing about.

"3" is not a local channel here in the Wash DC area. Try 4, 5, 7, or 9. The best way to see if this is active, is to just use the Dish Guide and put it on all channels. Then scroll down to the single channels under 100 and see if they are there.
Also I found that that there is a new "Dish Home" channel (also accesible from the Menu button) where I can look up movie thearters listings by my zip code. Pretty slick.

For instance, if you have a Dish 500 and a second Dish 300, you will be able to use both dishes to 4 receivers. If you get a 721, you can easily hook two of those 4 receiver outputs to the 721 without having to buy anything extra.
Take my word for it, get the SW64 installed. You will thank me later.
It's also possible to do the same thing with Dishpro equipment (someone correct if I'm wrong). Since I don't have any Dishpro stuff, I can't tell you exactly how it works. Hopefully someone can pop in here and explain it.

I can't pinpoint the date but I believe it was 2-3 chats ago. I reember threads commenting on how some receivers could not do thsi but they may have ben in the orther forum. If I am hallucinating thsi it is a rather vivid hallucination. I suspect it is reality.

I've got the dish 500 and 300 with a 501 and 3-301's. My switches are:
DP34-500 w/3 inputs
Port 1: DP Twin-2 - 110
Port 2: DP Twin-1 - 119
Port 3: DP Single - 61.5
I get my locals on their acutal numbers (detroit) on my 301's, not yet on my 501.

I did a search over there. I cannot locate it but I did find a reference to Charlie not being specific in the February chat. Only problem is I don't think there was a Charlie Chat that month.
So since I can't prove it I will withdraw my comment.

I realize "3" is not an active channel in the DC area; that was simply an example of a channel between 1 and 101. None of the current DC locals: 4, 5, 7, 9, 20, or 50 work.
BTW, where was it reported that Dishplayers definitely will not receive this upgrade? Was that on the Charlie Chat?
Geronimo
07-02-02, 10:47 AM
Ok let's try this again. I could have sworn that in a Charlie Chat ealier this year Mr. Ergen made mention of such an upgrade----but that no date or schedule for rollout was announced. I also thought I recalled threads here and/or in the other forum on this subject.
Mr. Blount challenged my memory ( I am 173 after all) and since Icould not find such a thread and don't tape Charlie Chats I said that I was probably wrong. Maybe it was wishful thinking on my part.
Right now only the Open TV receivers have this feature (and they are still rolling it out to them). So there is no definite word on this as it realtes to Dishplayers, 3700s etc.
BTW you must be without the free 2nd DISh there are more DC locals than you list, 53, 56, 14 and 32 are available---but not at those numbers.
Maybe we should have a DC area DBS gathering here at the reservation sometime.

for those of you who received the proper Upgrade already,
and getting those locals on Lower channels - does 110 has to be connected to the Open TV IRD or not nessesarily ( meaning that those Lower Channels on EPG come from 119 )?

The chat was back in January. It never said all receivers but it never narrowed it down either. From that I assumed he meant all but well you now the old joke about assuming. I do not know if they intend to roll it out on non Open TV receivers or not. Maybe a good Charlie Chat or Tech chat question.
But to be honest I never saw an announcement that said they were stopping with the Open TV receivers so why do you think they are?----lol
Here is a link to that month's summary from the other board I can't acccess January posts here.

Kansas City stations are now showing up on the lower channels on my 4900. Also, I got a Dish OpenTV upgrade that I wasn't expecting on the 4900. So far, nothing new on my 501.

My 301 receivers got the new feature with the P170 software upgrade. My 501 receiver hasn't received the upgrade yet.

I pitched that idea to DISH a while ago, along with the
idea of matching the cable and/or broadcast channel numbers.
I got no response or job offer, but they did implement the
channel matching part, so they may have been listening,
who knows?
My 3900 got the update sometime just before July 4th. My other 3900 was left on during the whole weekend I was away so it didn't recieve the update yet.

I guess we got the answer on the Charlie Chat when he implied that the software would be coming for DishPlayers, but that it would take longer because a third party is involved.
Now where is that reliable source who said "The Dishplayer will NOT be receiving this upgrade?" Chris??
Geronimo
07-11-02, 07:07 AM
In another forum someone characterized Charlie's remark as being negative about the DP. I am confused. In the Jan chat he mentioned the upgrade but never qualified as applying to some receivers and not others. However right now only Open TV receivers have it.
Several folks have posted here and in the other forum that ONLY Open TV receivers will get it. They may be right. But I am unsure why they think that.
I would not bet on anything. For the DP or my trusty 3700.

Are Los Angles locals on spot beams?
The Big Four and KTLA are CONUS. KCAL, KCOP and a couple of others are on Spot, and the rest are CONUS on the 148 side sat. If you REALLY want to know, look here:

I have had it for a long time on my 501, I think it came two software releases ago. Check your system info (menu-6-1-3) and see if you have software release P165 or P166, if not make sure you are set for software updates without your permission (menu-6-1-5) then switch your 508 off with the power button on the remote and leave it for half an hour, in that time the latest software release should download. You should see the 508 come alive a few minutes after switching it off which means the new software is being downloaded. Leave it alone while that is happening and switch it back on once the 508 has gone back to sleep again.

Thanks everyone,
I get it working. Just needed to allow an upgrade of my software.
Thanks, DCB
