Yeah, just couldn't get my 811 to work and thought it was time for a change. So I'm moving to DTV.

Question is, once I cancel Dish, what will they want me to do with their dishes? Do they come get them? Do they expect me to climb on my roof and bring them down? I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this.

Leave DISH there.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this.Any leased receivers will need to be returned. E* will send you boxes and charge you the fee in your contract if they don't get the receivers back in a timely manner.

They may also ask for the LNB back (which is on the dish). They will tell you when you call.

Just think it through. I've been a DTV customer for about 6 years. Their SD quality is pretty bad, not that Dish is much better, but they have so little HD programming and no mpeg 4 HD DVR. Their customer service has been great.

Believe me I've thought it through. I really have no need for the DVR and DTV does have locals in HD. (Dish I know is soon to follow).

The 811 has been a complete disaster with no end in sight. (Black Screens constantly). Plus, DTV has a really good deal. If it sucks at the end of the year, I'll switch back.

Question about the LNB though, I would still have to climb up and get those right? Crazy times I say!

Yes, you will have to climb up and get the lnb.

Actually Dish just launched New York and Los Angeles locals in HD for ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX.

Just spoke to Dish, they said if I want to leave the Dish and LNB I could. I'm actually going to ask the DTV guy to take them down if that's possible. They two Dish Network Dishes actually need to come down to put the Direct Dish up.

It will be interesting to see what your thoughts are on D* vs. E* (Especially after the "Honeymoon" period"). I would be interested to see if you think D* is more susceptible to rain fade than E*. I'm very surprised you have had so much trouble with your 811, mine has been virtually bullet proof. Good luck.

Get a FTA receiver and keep watching the remaining free channels, or re-aim the dish to Anik and get some free radio from Canada.

You could also get a Ku LNB and 30-36" dish and watch some interesting International stuff, too.

Sorry to see you leave E* but I think you may be more sorry with D*.
No flame against D*, its just that if you have a large format TV their SD is more awfull than E*s if that is even poosible. GOD I miss VOOOM[sigh]!:(

I had a bad 811 of the 2 I have and they swaped it out without much fuss. The HDMI/DVI still sucks so I use the componant and its fine. GOD I miss VOOOM  [sigh]!

Are they now installing the VP211 MPEG$ in place of the 811s in new sub/installs?
If the 811s crash and burn what is the replacement.

I would think "customer retention" would/should be able to do some justice for C* if he has a history of problems.

Bear!

Come on FIOS!!!

If the 811s crash and burn what is the replacement.Since they are not making 811s any more the 211 would have to be the replacement - as soon as the warehouses run out of 811s. (That doesn't mean that there isn't a chance you won't get an 811 that was reconditioned - but it's getting less likely.)

This is what you do .....

attach a car battery to each reciver to fry it. Let dish foot the bill you can say you had a deadly electrical surge. there under warranty any way being a leased box.

take the dish down and use it for a barbque lid.
<end joke>
Note Please dont take me serious on this post.

Anyone see the episode of The Red Green Show where Red made a giant wok out of a BUD? I suppose you could do that on a smaller scale.

Smooth as butter! That is the description of the D* install. At first I thought it was going to be trouble. It was raining, the installer was unsure about removing the E* dishes and carrying the big D * dish up the latter. But he did, and he did it very quickly.

I have 2 standard receivers now and one high definition (H20). Good news is that all channels work, both OTA and Satellite. I actually took about an hour to compare the OTA local high def to Satellite local high def. Yes, the OTA look slightly better....slightly, but on my TV (sony XBR 36inch) you really can't notice, my wife can't.

I'm sure if I had a 60 inch you would see more compression with the local satellite hi def, but for now, I'm sold.

So, in the end we will have to see how my experience with Direct pans out, but intially I'm a happy camper.

Definately tell us how the D* SD channels compare. Like I mentioned before, I've been a D* subscriber for 6 years now and will be switching to E* on 2/15. D*'s customer service has been great when I've called. (which has only been maybe 3 times in 6 years) I have never had a problem with any boxes and in the past 6 years my reception has gone out a total of maybe 5 times for just a few minutes each time. One was last year when we had like 12 tornadoes in the DC area. Skies were black in the middle of the day.

Let me know your comparison. I am thinking of going to Directv also !

Okay, after comparing the two for like 3 hours, I have to say .....it's indecisive! On my two standard def TV's (27inch and 32inch) really couldn't tell the difference, might be because they are not big enough to see the compression artifacts. I'm using S-video on both of them by the way.

On the High Def (36 XBR Sony) you could maybe make an argument that the Standard channels are a notch below Dish Network. Even so, not much of a difference to me to make a scene you know.

The High Def locals as said before look slightly better OTA than over the dish. HD channels like HBO or Showtime look great to me. Watched I Robot on HBO and can't complain. Boxing on Showtime looked really good.

So, until something crazy happens like lose signal during the SuperBowl, I'm pretty pleased with the experience with Direct.

P.S. The only gripe I have is the remote. On the Dish remote, you could browse channels while you are watching the screen, the big screen. You know, the menu pops up on the top and you can see what's on other channels, I can't seem to get this on the Direct Remote. Oh well, small price to pay I guess.

LOL! There have been folks who have decried E* for far smaller things. Let us know what your thoughts are after 6 to 8 months. Be real interested in hearing them.

Thanks for the comparison. It's great to hear someone tell the truth instead of hearing th same old mine is better than yours. D* really screwed up when they decided to give Tivo the boot. The Tivo Box's are so easy to use and navigation was so simple. Hopefully E*'s remote and DVR won't let me down. Not to mention D*'s Tivo units would record as is without any further compression. Tivo rules! You will be happy with D*. As mentioned before my only gripe was no high def mpeg 4 dvr. Once you have a DVR you just can't go back. Commercials, yuck:) (Superbowl not included)

The SD PQ problem does not really rear its ugly head untill you go over 50" in screen size. I sent back a 72" and got a 62" because the PQ was giveing me virtigo:rolleyes:

See I bought the 72 while VOOM [sigh] was still lit. [Unbelievable SD, more like EDTV] When they went dark, a month later, and I still had D* "cheap" from before V* I thought the TV went bad at the same time. SO [when SEARS was still SEARS ] swapped out for another mits 72. Same old. Went with E* and it was better but not great and then down sized to 62. I refuse to go smaller so I just don't watch much SD.

Leave the dishes let directv use them and the lines. Good question about the 811 vs. 211. As of Feb. 1 E* is no longer activating any mpeg2 HD receivers so the swap would have to be a 211.

You are right about that, it was a few years ago but I had both systems at the same time for over a year and the overall picture quality was about the same. A few channels looked better on E than on D and a few looked better on D than E (probably compression issues on a transponder) but overall the same quality.

The thing these critics dont take into account is that without each other, E or D would not have a reason to keep prices competitive. Witness the period when D started before E and wanted $499 for a basic RCA system and over $700 for a two receiver system. E came along and offered incentives which D had to start offering in order to be competitive.

I have also had many problems with my 811. I have to unplug it all the time and restart it. I have been thinking about switching for a while because of thier recievers and thier high priced hd. Is dish really any cheaper then cable now with the $20 hd pack??

Time to upgrade to a VIP 211:D at least you will save the shipping cost to swap out the 811.

Cable:p . Unless you have remarkable cable in your area and/or a smaller TV{under 30"] Most cable doesn't have as good PQ as E*. Check to see if you have FIOS in your street.
Search FIOS.

True FIOS is a system mark of Verizon. But its just an implementation of fibre optical, not verizon "broadband" (dsl). And yes others are offering similar but don't have as large as base as verizon.
