I am scheduled to receive the new 622 from Dish before the end of the February and I would like to purchase a DVD Recorder to use with 622 to burn certain programs on DVDs. Can the experts here comment on what features a DVD Recorder should have for the optimum setup with 622 please? I realize I will not be able to burn HD content to DVDs.

Please address the following:

1. Do I really need a DVD Recorder with a hard drive? (I do have a DV camcorder I will also use to transfer video via FireWire port for editing and burning DVDs)

2. Is there a way to transfer content from 622 digitally to the DVD recorder, instead of transfering it via analog video/audio cables (perhaps via a USB, FireWire or LAN port)? I would like to automate and optimize content transfer from 622 to DVD recorder as much as possible.

3. Please mention specific models and/or features I should have on the DVD Recorder for this setup and comment on any other issues for this configuration.

Thanks for any input!

Based on current DVR offerings. I figure the 622 will operatore in similar fashion.

1) If you plan on doing editing on your DVD recorder for you camcorder having a hard drive would be useful. I prefer to do video editing on a PC though.

2) Not that I am aware of. You will have to take the conversion hit.

3) Component input would be nice if such a thing exists. Might want to ask the 942 crowd what ones they find work well with their units.

1. You don't need a hard drive, but you'll find most DVD recorders with high-end features good for use with HD are also the ones that have hard drives built in.

2. No. This is yet another E* player with various ports marked 'for future use' that will likely never be activated, or when they are activated it will be for proprietary use only (like transfering to a Dish Pocket player)

3. To record the best quality available, you'll want one that includes the ability to record progressive scan via component inputs. While you'll won't be able to record 720p or 1080i, many players do record in 480p and that's still pretty sweet looking. In addition, you'll want to look for one that can record Dolby Digital audio. That relatively new in the world on DVD recorders but some are making their way out there. Last, I'd look for a recordered that acoomodate dual layer dvdrw.
