View Full Version : Quick-and-dirty CNN? Best option...

I need to temporarily have CNN available to me at a remote location. I have a 721 and a 311 on my account. Can I just take my 311 and an old dish with me on this trip, point it at whichever bird CNN is on (is it 110 or 119?) -- and be all set?

Do I need any switches even -- or can I run straight from the LNB to the 311?

While we're at it... The location I'm going to actually has an old DirecTV dish there. Are the LNBs compatible? Could I just use that dish and repoint it? Or no?

I'm trying to take the minimum with me is all. Just want to get CNN and maybe a couple of other channels on one satellite for a few days. What are my option?

Thanks!

- John...

P.S. Do I need a switch to get all of the AT-60 channels that are available on the one satellite? In other words, I'd like to get all of the channels that I subscribe to with AT-60 that are available from the same bird that CNN is on. What is the minimum equipment I'd need? Thanks!

Just point the directv dish at 119 and hook the 311 straight to the lnb and you will be all set.

Sweet! Thanks! I didn't know if the LNBs were compatible or whatever. I should be able to just take the 311 and some cable then. And I should get all of the AT-60 channels that are on 119 without any sort of a switch, correct?

Thanks again!

You will lose a few AT60 channels that are on 110. The EKB has a table that will show you this.

You will only lose the TV Guide channel and a few shopping channels.

Indeed -- I'm aware of that. I meant that I just wanted to make sure that I didn't need any switch at all to be able to get all of the channels that are on 119. I didn't know if you needed one just to do polarity changes or whatever. Sounds like I don't and can run straight from a Dish or DirecTV dish pointed at 119 and run it directly into the 311 and be all set. Thanks!

As long as the LNB can handle the switch in polarities on one coax (it should).

MAKE SURE you do a checkswitch with nothing connected to your receiver so it doesn't send DP power levels/commands to the LNB and overpower it.

ALSO, if it is a Phase 3 or higher DirecTV satellite (so not only at 101) then it wont work...

It is an old 1-satellite DirecTV dish (or it might actually be a 1-satellite Dish Network dish -- all I know is that there is some old dish there already from one of the two). So, I think I should be all set.

Thanks again, all!

AMEN! This is a very important first step when switching LNB's.

I have a feeling DIRECTV lnbs wont work because DISH LNBS are stacked and DIRECTV unstacked.

For a single receiver they could be seen as a legacy LNB.

they will be a legacy lnb
