Hey Guys,
I have been a longtime Direct TV customer, and have always done my own installs. I have a question for you. We just purchased a cottage in New hampshire that has 2 round dishes installed on it. My question is in NH it seems pretty common to have 2 dishes as opposed to an oval one. When you are that far north, do the Phase 3 not work that well? They have them going it a multi switch right now. I have an unused receiver here at home that I was thinking of bringing up. Can I make this setup work, or should I not bother and go get a new dish. What do you think? Location is in Grafton. One dish is currently on the roof, and the other is on the ground. Line of site isn't bad at all. Probably less trees up there than here at home, as far as the sat is concerned! Looking forward to the info.

Is one of the dishes pointing more southeast? If so, then you're getting your local channels from the 72.5 satellite. It's too far east for the Phase III dish to pick it up.

Yeah, it looks pretty extreme. I haven't climbed on the roof with a compass. A little slippery right now! The one on the roof is the one for locals I believe. Do you know if the NH locals are on 72 or 119 like us in MA? Wouldn't mind eliminating a dish if possible.

At home, I punched in my zip for up there, and when you do a signal test, it says 101 and 119, so I am assuming it is the same as home. Maybe they were shooting for basic and HD if it is shooting elsewhere? Not sure. There is absolutely no OTA HD in this area, but it is a getaway!!:)

If I am correct in that the zip-code for Grafton NH is 03240, then DTV lists your locals as being out of Burlington VT, and that would put you on 72.5W

You are a long, long way from Burlington but there you go, DTV doesn’t take into consideration the local mindset which would more likely associate this location with Concord NH and its Boston locals.

Thanks Punkitup! I always wondered why they were doing this multiple dish setup instead of the oval. So it look as if I have to leave it as is.

The law that allows for delivery of local channels is based off of the data collected by Nielsen Media. New Hampshire is divided into three different Nielsen markets:

Portland: Carroll and Coos County
Burlington: Grafton and Sullivan County
Boston: the rest of the state

DirecTV is only following what the law allows. The only reason DirecTV is giving the original poster the Burlington locals is because the law only allows the original poster to receive the Burlington locals, since he lives in either Grafton or Sullivan County.

Yeah well technically you are closer to Burlington VT at 87-miles then you are to Boston at 95-miles. But either way you would be talking a deep-fringe setup on a tower in order to receive the programming OTA considering the hills that lay between. I would have thought that area would have been a pretty good candidate for national feeds, but I don’t know much about how that decision-making processes comes about.

Yes, yes, I was using “DTV” as a quick generalization, my apologies, strike it and insert FCC or entity of your choice.
