View Full Version : NY sports in HD?
Does DirecTV broadcast the local NY sports networks (MSG, YES, FSN, Mets Network) in HD?
I have seen Yankees and Nets games in HD since becoming an HD sub in August of last year. I believe that YES carries NJ Devils games so any home games they do in HD should be available, but I'm not big into hockey so I can't say I've actually seen one. As far as MSG goes, I'm quite sure those aren't available. FSNY...what do they have? The Islanders? I'm not really sure on that.
As for the Mets, there hasn't been an agreement reached so that remains to be seen.
DirecTV only has an agreement with YES Network for HD. MSG and FSNY, although they broadcast Knick, Ranger and Devil games on HD, does not broadcast them on HD on DirecTV. Hopefully that will change someday
Therefore, you can only get the Yankees and Nets on HD. The Yankees have already announced that they will broadcast all home games and 27 road games this year on HD.
As previously posted, on February 3, sports columnist Phil Mushnick of the New York Post wrote in his column (I have it so I know he really reported it), that DirecTV had reached agreement to carry the Mets games on SportNet New York. There was nothing specific as to detail, but SN NY reports on its website (www.sportsnetnewyork.com) that ALL home games and selected road games will be available in HD. Also, ALL studio shows will be available in HD. As D* picked up the YES-HD games around mid-season last year (channel 94) - a fair assumption is that at least some Mets games will be on D* in HD.
BTW, D* has never made any official mention that I have seen that it began to show YES-HD - as a matter of fact, towards the end of last season, there was a Yankees home game that I expected to see on HD - but it wasn't on so I called in and the CSR was not even aware that ANY games were being broadcast on channel 94 (amazing how many things these peeps are not aware of).
We will find out soon about the Mets though, SportsNet NY is due to launch on March 16.

Yes, seeing the Yankees in HD is *almost* (but not quite) as good as being at The Stadium...
On the other hand, at home the beers are cheaper, the bathroom is close and the tickets for your comfy lounge chair with a great view is only $10.99 per month... and there is no Major Deegan Expressway to battle after the flood gates open, lol...
But, Goddamnit, I DO love going to Yankee games. :-)

I believe you will see MSG-HD and FSN-HD on D* (or E*) when hell freezes over.
My understanding is that these two channels, like Comcast in Philadelphia, use landlines to carry the signal and therefore are not REQUIRED to be offered to satellite companies. In the case of MSG-HD and FSN-HD, CV is holding onto these believing it will drive loads of people to abandon satellite for CV's miserable channel offerings. You'll notice that when there is an HD Knicks, Rangers, Islanders or Devils game being carried on one of the channels in the 90s, or even on HDNet, it is blacked out here in NY (assuming the feed is the MSG or FSN one).
Now will hell freeze over in our lifetimes? My guess is eventually, yes. But who knows when.

nlk10010,
I believe you are right on the CV homefront. CV owns MSG and FSN, therefore the chances of those channels in HD coming to D* is very small. I have come to accept this being a NY Mets fan.
Another point to bring up, "Phil M." of the NY Post unfortunately has it wrong in his Feb. 3rd post. I spoke to a good source at SNY. I was told as of today there is no signed agreement as of yet though very optimistic that something should be inked soon, possibly before March 16th. I will keep you all informed of my latest findings.
Any chance of MSG and FSN now nearly one year later from the latest post here??
