Andy Wright, president of the Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association, told the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission that the nation's small dish services are well on their way in "meeting and exceeding" an FCC goal to get digital/HDTV programming to all Americans.
Wright, in a letter to FCC Chairman Michael Powell, said DBS is well positioned to meet the FCC leader's challenge of delivering - by Jan. 1 - up to five digital programming services that are providing "value-added digital programming," including HDTV, during at least 50 percent of their prime-time schedule.
In the letter, Wright also pointed out that DBS currently provides movies, sporting events, documentaries, concerts, public affairs programming and original series in HDTV. That satellite-delivered content is coming from HBO, HDNet, CBS, Showtime, Discovery and through pay-per-view.
"Depending on the availability of capacity, DBS providers intend to continue increasing the number of HD channels they offer, enhancing the television viewing experience for consumers nationwide," Wright said.
Wright also said DBS providers are addressing the digital transition from the hardware side of the equation.
