I just switched from Directv to dish because of this new HD receiver but so far am not impressed with the SD format. Is there a setting on this reciever that I need to change so that the SD signal converts automatically to 16:9. I hate using the format buttons because they distort the picture. HD signal is great! I had my new Sony SXRD hooked up to my Directv last week and this was not a problem, although the receiver was not HD. Am I missing something, or is this something I have to live with? Any help would be great.

well once you stretch a 4:3 image to 16:9 its going to distort no matter how good the siganl is.

Well I guess my question is: Is there a setting (besides Zoom, Partial Zoom, or Stretch) that will give me a full undistorded 16:9 image in SD? This is my first 16:9 TV so I am not familar with this, although the TV salesman said I would not have this problem...

I don't think the zoom modes stretch, but the cut off the top and bottom of pictures

For a 4:3 image to fit a 16:9 screen, it either has to be stretched, or zoomed in, cutting off part of the top 7 bottom. Now if it's a standard def show, broadcast in widescreen (Like say, The Shield), then it can be zoomed to fill the screen without losing (much) of the picture.
Oh BTW, your salesman lied.

With all due respect, you are correct. You aren't familiar enough with 16:9 to understand this issue. There is no way to have an undistorted or non cropped image of a 4:3 image on a 16:9 set unless you view it as 4:3 with side bars. Think about it logically. How can a 4:3 image on a 16:9 set appear without distortion or cropping if you try to fill a 16:9 screen with a 4:3 image?

Partial zoom is as good as it gets on 4:3 material on a 16:9 TV
