My friend just purchased a HD Flatscreen monitor TV for his bedroom. He has Dish network.

In his bedroom the receiver is just a small cheap model receiver with Coax and RCA jacks on the back of it. We thought it would hook up to the monitor pretty easily. Well it did not work.
After calling Dish they told us that the RCA jacks are for VCR hook up only(input only?). They are trying to tell him the only thing he can do is purchase there complete HD package and HD receivers.

He does not want HD, nor to pay the extra cost for it. He just wants regular channels on his TV monitor.

Radio Shack has a 311 model reciever for sale. Can be buy one of those and hook it up? Somebody told him he had to get a HD receiver or he would have lines in his picture. Is there any truth to that?

Why spend extra for an HD TV and not want HD?

You can use an older receiver, but the picture will suck.

Do they make new flat screens TVs in Non HD?

Why not pay for HD? They only have a few channels that are broadcast in HD and most of those channels he does not watch.

What do you mean by suck?
Were not looking for a HD quality picture here. Just a normal quality picture.

If the RCA jacks are outputs and are labelled video (yellow), audio right + left (red + white) they should be fine going to the tv. Better than the coax.

What model receiver is it?

Ignore the Dish CS rep. What they said is nuts.

He can use the 311 too, and no, there won't be lines in it.

I am not sure on the model of the receiver. I do know the TV he got has no Coax so we have to use RCA's

They are not labeled output or input. He hooked the TV up to it and could not get a signal. I had him go through all the video1,2,3.. modes on the TV. The only other thing I can think of is maybe something needs inabled in the Dish box for the RCA jacks to work.

I am not sure on the model of the receiver. I have been trying to do this with him over the phone. I will not able to get over there till this weekend. I do know TV he got has no Coax so we have to use RCA's

Try hooking up a dvd or vcr to the tv to see if anything is wrong with the tv inputs.

If your friend wants to use the 311, he can. It has s-video, rf and RCA outputs. S-video is probably your best bet if you don't want HD, but you'll still need to connect the red and white RCA plugs to the TV for sound.

Sooner or later though, your friend will want HD input on that TV, and the 311 won't do it.

Yes, there are several models of non-HDTV flat screens on the market. I have many friends that spent thousands on a HDTV simply because they liked the way the TV’s housing looked with the rest of their furniture and don’t care about picture or sound quality. Any HDTV should be compatible with an SD receiver.

Make sure your friend is in fact actually running the cable to the composite video and analog audio inputs on the display. If he has accidentally run the cables into outputs, or into component video jacks, things won't work. After the wiring is correct, make sure the correct input is selected; most fancier TVs have many inputs (6+), so one sometimes has to cycle through a number of them in order to select the correct one.

As far as needing a special setup... No, absolutely not.
