Forgive me if this is an ancient question (as I can't really seem to find the answer), but is any other company out there planning on building their own D* receiver with Tivo built into it (like the Sony Sat60? Especially for HD!!!). Or are we left to the whims of D* and their hardware? I have a Sat 60 and decided to "upgrade" to an HR15. Needless to say, the HR15 is going back to the store and I am going back to my Sony. What a joke. But will someone out there compete? or is this a dead issue? Just wondering.....

No, it is actually a Dead Issue.

DirecTV has complete control over what systems can tap into their data stream.. As they own the stream, and the encryption control for that stream.

Thus... without DirecTV's blessing, nothing get's built.

And since DirecTV about 18 months ago or so, basically started to pull all 3rd party vendors from the game... and everything is sold under the DirecTV brand name...

The R15 and HR20 are the next generation DVRs for DirecTV.
There are other products DirecTV will be releasing...

:new_Eyecr How cool would that be! An add-on tuner card would do away with the need for all of that hacking stuff on the DTiVos. 3/4s of my fondness for my DTiVos is due to the hacks that can be added. Earl, can you point me to somewhere this is being talked about?

Um, never mind! I did a Google and came up with some interesting stuff!
