View Full Version : Need advice on return of R10 for R15 warranty issue!

I recently purchased another DVR (R10) from Value Electronics only to have the freezing, pixelating, and dark screen thing happen (bad drive). They happily replaced my unit with another R10 only to have the same thing happen right away. I called and was asked if I wanted an R15 and I said I rather have the R10 or even Hughes DVR80 they still had. I was told I would be called back and have never heard back from them nor my email I sent.

My question is it is still under warranty and PROVIDED they stand behind the product should I get the R15 and hope it improves verses keeping an R10 with known problems? I throughly enjoy the dual buffers and live TV swap I have gotten use to and hate to give it up. Their website no longer offers anything other than R15's therefore I assume that is my only choice.

I assume the drive on the R10 could get continually worse if I knew it would not I might try and live with it, however, I need to act FAST in order to try and get a replacement R15 if that is what I decide.

With all the R15 issues but hope for continual improvements should I change or live with what I like and hope for the best?

Thank you.

I had an R10 and it was okay but I gave it to a relative and purchased an R15 and loved it. I now have a total of 4 R15's

Well, given you are asking the question in the R15 forum I'd expect you'd hear the R15 as a response.

Ask it in the TiVo forum and you'll likely hear get another TiVo that does not have a component defect.

The Tivo is certainly more mature and stable, although any box can be delivered with a defective component. Both boxes in question (R10 and R15) are DirecTV produced systems and have the same odds of a component defect. Conversely the R15 is supposed to be the "future" SD DVR with DTV.

In terms of needing to act "FAST," how long is your warranty? Only the DirecTiVo's are not being produced anymore. If you want a R15 there is already quite a stockpile of them out there and I'd hazard to guess that there will not be a shortage anytime soon.

Personally I'd make certain that they problem is indeed the box (can't tell from the information provided in your post). If it indeed is, then get whatever you want without a component defect.

I would expect some R15 paritality but I know there are many who are unhappy from my reading. My Hughes has never done this (freezing) and is still not while it is in the bedroom and the problem is not weather related as far as the pixelating. I am not sure what else other than a hard drive it could be.

As far as warranty I am talking about the 30 return to the retailer.

Have you tried hooking up the D10 in the bedroom to see if it gets the pixelation there? You could have a cable issue.

I see. I'm assuming that the R10 is flaky in either location and the Hughes is fine in either location, so that pretty much makes it an issue with the box. That being the case, I'd agree with your assessment.

Well, I took the R15 route and while it may be the "future" with DTV, it is certainly not the present (hence the comments you have read from many posters). Check out the "1st Quarter" thread with poll. Lots of opinions there.

It still comes back to want you want, have something that works well today, or something that hopefully will work well in the future. I think that most fairly sums up the situation at hand.
